Phyllis Schlafly: 'The Pay Gap, Really, Is Something That Women Like'

Not The Onion!!

http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/phyllis-schlafly-pay-gap-really-something-women

Anti-feminist crusader Phyllis Schlafly stopped by VCY America’s “Crosstalk” program yesterday to discuss her book “Who Killed The American Family?” (Spoiler:“It’s not just the gays.”)

One overlooked murderer of the family, Schlafly said, are “the free trade people who have done the work of the feminists by getting rid of [middle class] jobs.” This led her to discuss the gender pay gap, which she said is actually something that women like because they want to marry someone who makes more than they do (a sentiment that she has expressed before).

“Women like to marry a man who makes more than she does,” she explained, “so then she can take time off and work fewer hours when she has something she’d rather do like have a kid and look after her children. So the pay gap, really, is something that women like.”

I bet it is a strain for some of them to eat, breath and sleep. That ONE brain cell must stay busy 24/7.

It’s been a year since the last time I wrote to you. How have you been? I’ve been busy trying to help create a future of justice and equality for the young women of my generation. I still shop at Victoria’s Secret. I just heard that you went on the radio recently where you said, “Women like to marry a man who makes more than she does, so then she can take time off and work fewer hours when she has something she’d rather do like have a kid and look after her children. So the pay gap, really, is something that women like.”

Really, Phyllis? Do we really have to go here again? Do you still not understand the concept that marriage is an equal partnership? Do you really not understand that not all women are married, want to be married, or even if they are married want to have children? Do you not understand that even if a man makes more than his wife, his income might not be enough to support a family alone? Can you not grasp that because marriage is an equal partnership, partners can decide for themselves how to share responsibilities and that it’s not always women who choose to work fewer hours and spend more time looking after the children? It seems you do understand that same-sex marriages exist, even if you don’t understand them very well. So what about those marriages that don’t even involve a man at all?...

No, Phyllis. The pay gap is not something women like. It’s especially not something working women trying to support families, as your own mother did, like. It’s not something men who see women as more than property, a pretty face, a body, a sperm receptacle, a servant, or breeding stock like either. Your bitter words that you pull out of your time capsule in order to sell books don’t resonate with today’s women. Today’s women have a wide variety of choices off the menu and want to see other women treated fairly and equally regardless of the choices they make.

Well, it was nice catching up with you. I’d be happy to go bra shopping with you sometime in case you need help finding something that doesn’t cut off circulation to your brain. I’ll leave you with little something heard often uttered by Southern women sipping sweet tea where I’m from, “Bless your heart.”
