Semi-gloss is a compromise and is usually used in bathrooms.

Satin is a good choice for rooms not needing wall cleaning often.

Flat is usually used for ceilings.

A little pricy but how often do you paint. Worth the little investment. Easy to use and looks great. I agree with flat on the ceilings.

If that is not an issue it depends on which room you are painting. I paint bedrooms and hallways with matte finish, kitchens with semi-gloss and living and dining rooms with satin, but that is just me.

4. Semi-gloss

It will repel moisture and dirt better, and clean easier.
You could also consider both, satin across the upper part and semi across the bottom below dognose height. use tape for a clean line. Frogtape brand works quite well.
Clean any spots first with Dawn solution to remove any previous stains so they won't bleed through.

I think I am going to start over with the semi gloss. Less maintence with two curious boxers.

... and semi-gloss was for trim, kitchens, and bathrooms but my wife and I don't do that in our own house.

Modern semi gloss or satin paints are available in rich colors. Why suffer bland colors and dull surfaces?

Live a little!

Long ago I used to maintain crappy student housing. The paint we used was the same off-white color and texture as spray cans of Kilz primer. Why paint the entire wall when you could just scrape off and spray over mystery stains?

It may have influence my attitude about paint a bit.

Also if you set up a box fan or two once you're done working things will dry a bit faster.

When I handled rentals I found that we had to do a lot less painting when we started painting everything with a good quality satin or semi. Personally I'd go with a semi with a white or beige, and a satin with anything else, an attention-grabbing color in a shiny finish is just too much for most rooms.

I really like the Valspar paint at Lowes. It goes on really well and doesn't take a ton of coats for a dramatic color change. I just had to cover up the hot pink accent wall my sister inflicted on the family homestead, so I'm now a big fan of a nice thick paint with a lot of pigment that can make unfortunate color choices go away with minimal effort on my part.
