Governor Pete Ricketts says repeal of the death penalty by the legislature this past week won't stop his administration from proceeding with planning and carrying out the executions of the 10 men currently on death row.
Ricketts had announced earlier in the month that the state had been able to obtain supplies of the three drugs needed for lethal injection executions and said on Friday that he doesn't plan to cancel the shipments.
State Attorney General Doug Peterson said Thursday that he believes repeal of the death penalty doesn't affect those on death row because the state constitution gives the pardons board the sole authority to convert a death sentence into life in prison.
State Senator Ernie Chambers of Omaha, the law's lead sponsor, says the law is constitutional because it doesn't change the sentences, it just eliminates the state's authority to carry out executions.
. The law doesn't go into effect for three months and supporters of capital punishment are already making plans for a petition drive to put the issue on next year's ballot.

(58 posts)4. Then the Nebraska governor has to be indicted for capital murder
and in a federal pen in Marion, Indiana, waiting for his needle, if he kills those 10 men, instead of commuting them to life without parole, and saving the taxpayers millions of dollars.
This man is mentally insane, and needs to be removed from society, including ownership of the Chicago Cubs and its affiliated properties.

(79 posts)5. He is evil.
If he executes the prisoners after the death penalty has been voted down by the legislature, he should be impeached, if that is available in Nebraska.

(12,153 posts)6. FDA says Nebraska can't legally import execution drug
Gov. Pete Ricketts said Friday that his plan is to proceed with the executions of the 10 men on death row in Nebraska. The state has already paid more than $54,000 for new supplies of lethal injection drugs, which will be shipped from India.
LINCOLN A push to execute 10 condemned men despite the repeal of Nebraskas death penalty was confronted with yet another hurdle Friday when a federal agency said the state cannot import a critical lethal injection drug.
Gov. Pete Ricketts said he agrees with the attorney general that Nebraska should be able to execute its death row inmates upon receiving the drugs it recently bought from a broker in India.

He's fabulous - I moved from Nebraska in 1972 and he was my hero back then. It is awesome that he is still fighting for the cause!
