This Week In Racism: Tamir Rice’s Family Charged Nearly $18,000 For His Body

http://www.care2.com/causes/this-week-in-racism-tamir-rices-family-charged-nearly-18000-for-his-body.html

Last week in this column I wrote about 12-year-old Tamar Rice, shot to death by Cleveland police for brandishing a fake weapon — an air gun.

It gets worse.

1. It took half a year, but the family of Tamir Rice has decided to cremate the 12-year-old’s body. However, there’s a catch: unbelievably, they are being charged nearly $18,000 for storing the body during the six-month investigation, according to Daily Kos.

First the police gun down on innocent boy, and then his parents must pay for the bullet-riddled body? It is the government who should pay for the child they murdered, not the boy’s family. If you agree, please sign the Care2 petition demanding that the city of Cleveland pay the body-storage bill and apologize to Mrs. Rice and her family.

Where is it stated that families have to pay for storing of a body during an investigation and who voted on it. I'd love a full investigation on this. Sounds like rules as they go to me.

However, this article does not include the fact that Tamir's mother chose to keep his body in storage, it was not required by either police investigators or the court.

Until now, Samaria Rice had chosen not to bury her child. She wanted to preserve any physical evidence on his body, keeping him in storage, in case further examination was needed. Though the probe remains incomplete, she made the painful decision to have his body cremated.

According to family attorney Walter Madison, Tamir's family is waiting for the investigation to end so they will not be subjected to burying him and having to exhume his body from the ground for yet another medical examination. Via text, Madison pointed out: "The city of Cleveland knows that too. The delay incurs a daily $75 fee. To date, the outstanding expenses are $18k which at some point Samaria Rice would have to be obligated to pay. They talk nice and are apologetic but they are waging war of a different brand."

From what I read it sounds as though his mother thought that the police did not get samples of all of the physical evidence, but the police did take the evidence; the city didn't require that the body be stored.

If anyone can find a gofundme page, please also share this. There is no way his mother should have to pay for this. If the city is despicable low lifes, at least we can show that not all people are.

the family should have to cover those costs of police having MURDERED their child.

From the original Daily Kos article some are saying the family delayed the burial not the government.

If the government kept the body for investigative reason then of course the family should not be charged. But if the family left him there while deciding what to do, then cost of storage would be normal.

it was his family's choice not to bury or cremate him after the investigation was completed; they chose to store his body. I sympathize with them, but to infer that the courts or police required that the body be stored but are making the family pay is incorrect.

Lest it appear they are worried it might set a precedent for other families of wrongfully killed 12 year old black kids.
