He could have gone further with his statement but I don't know if it would have been politically smart to do so. He took a bold leap as it is.

did so much to protect our rights:

Abington v Schempp
Brown v Board
Griswold v Connecticut
Loving v Virginia
Miranda v Arizona
New York Times v Sullivan
Tinker v Des Moines

But I am afraid that Court disappeared early in the Nixon era. And since Bush v Gore, we cannot even count on the Court's token nod towards stare decises -- as shown, in particular, by Citizens United v. FEC

Are you sure if gay marriage made its way to SCOTUS they wouldn't up hold the states rights to discriminate? I am not so sure.
If America keeps President Obama, if the Senate can get a Democrat supermajority and more conservative that liberal judges leave during the next four years then I feel the outcome would be better.

Though I still don't see why. Wasn't that Obama's position all along? A politician reiterates his same old position with slightly sexier language (and no actual action implied at all) in an election season, and suddenly it's 'historic'?
