CNN host and Newsweek/The Daily Beast columnist Howard Kurtz laid into MSNBC anchor Tamron Hall for cutting off a guest's mic on her Friday show.
Hall asked guest Tim Carney to weigh in on the report of GOP candidate Mitt Romney's bullying incidents in prep school. Before answering the question, Carney charged that Hall and her colleagues in the media were hyping up the story. That set Hall off. After smacking him down for a minute, she cut off his mic. "You're not gonna come on and insult me," she said to Carney.
After replaying the clip, Kurtz defended Carney, saying that all he did was "challenge her coverage of the report on Mitt Romney." Kurtz added, "It was Tamron Hall who was being insulting by silencing him."
Kurtz believed that it was "perfectly acceptable" for Carney to state that in his opinion, the story was being hyped up by the media. "Does Hall only want guests that agree with her handling of every story?" Kurtz wondered.
If you want to see a video of Kurtz, and who wouldn't????...LOL. Anyway, here's the link:

(36,063 posts)It was pretty obvious that Carney wanted to do what advocates always try to do when their champion is in trouble: change the subject
I see the meta-conflict as generally mapping onto the politics of confrontation.

(50,260 posts)it is what he has always done when push comes to shove. His wife has a consultant company called Fourth Estate Strategies. I first found the info on her company in 2006 and her bio has not been updated since then but the company is still active it seems. Here is the info on Sheri Annis:
Sheri Annis is a media consultant and political commentator whose clients range from California to Washington DC. She was the spokeswoman for Arnold Schwarzenegger during his first political campaign. She was chief spokeswoman for California's Proposition 227, the successful measure to eliminate California's failed bilingual education programs. In addition, she played a major role in California's Proposition 209 campaign, which eliminated race and gender-based preferences in government hiring, contracting and education. Her early career began in the California think tank world.
As president of Fourth Estate Strategies, she provides media training and communications strategy for high-level executives, academics and prominent think tanks. Her professional interests also include free market advocacy, race and gender issues, and political analysis.
Ms. Annis has written for National Review and has been quoted by news outlets such as the Los Angeles Times, Wall Street Journal, New York Times and Washington Post. Her television appearances include The Today Show, Hardball with Chris Matthews, The O'Reilly Factor, Fox & Friends, Countdown with Keith Olbermann and the former long-running ABC show Politically Incorrect, among others.

As you can see her 'interests' lie to the right of the political spectrum and the work she has done is GOP all the way, imo.
Howard and his wife, Sheri Annis, are both blatant GOP shills although he, at least, pretends to be otherwise.
Can't stand the man, never could.

(47,370 posts)is not known to be overbearing and abusive to her guests. She made it quite clear that Carney knew what the topic would be before he agreed to come on the show. Its not like Hall cuts guests' mics on a regular basis like Bill O'Reilly.

(47,370 posts)I'll bet she wanted to. I got the feeling that for her, this was one asshole too many and she probably wanted to do this many times in the past.
Carney will probably think carefully before he goes on another MSNBC show.

(82,849 posts)What Kurtz says happened and what actually happened. Other than those two minor quibbles, he's spot on.
Hall and Carney talked about the interview before going on the air. Carney then broke their agreement, and began blathering about what he wanted to talk about. Can't blame him for that, I suppose; it's SOP for these spokespeople to agree to talk about topics A, B, and C before they go on, but once the camera rolls and the mics are live, they pull the old switchyard and start talking about what they want to talk about. In this one instance, the interviewer (Hall) decided she wasn't going to play that game. She warned Carney a couple of times, but Carney ignored her warnings. And why not? Bait-and-switch works so very well, except this time when it didn't, and Hall simply went on to something else, while Carney was left talking to a dead mic.
But here comes Howard Kurtz, riding to the rescue of Carney in his distress, and validating the bob-and-weave while serving up a side of nastiness to Hall for actually holding Carney to his agreement.
Kurtz is many things, but a credible voice of media criticism isn't one of them. I have no doubt, though, that the RNC left a twenty on his dresser for his service.
