Gay Rights Organization Briefly Evacuated After Bomb Threat

The Washington, D.C., headquarters of the gay-rights organization Human Rights Campaign was evacuated this morning after D.C. police passed on an unspecified bomb threat, according to Metro Weekly.

The local gay-affairs newspaper reported the threat via its Twitter feed. The D.C. police notified HRC of a "potential bomb threat" at 11:45 a.m., and the organization cleared the building, telling Metro Weekly that "out of an abundance of caution the building has been evacuated and police are assessing the situation."

Today, in the wake of a bomb threat at HRC and possibly other LGBT and progressive organizations, NOM, the National Organization For Marriage, issued a statement at 1:25 PM ET:

Apparently, the D.C. Police received a report of a potential bomb threat to the Human Rights Campaign and possibly other groups in DC. We want to be the first to denounce any threat against the person or property of any gay marriage advocate, including HRC. America should not be a place where people are afraid to voice their views on marriage whether pro or con.

And while it might be just lip service from NOM, it certainly beats the studied silence from other adversarial groups. Whether they're sincere or not is a question I'll leave to others, but issuing a statement like this is a step in the right direction.

i.e., that they denounced before it was announced. I doubt there'll be an investigation into said rumors but it certainly makes me want someone to verify or deny.

Bomb threats are a common way to shut down operations of all sorts of things. Just the kind of tactic the right likes to use on Planned Parenthood clinics.
