Romney: The Price Of Same-Sex Marriage Is Paid By The Children
By Zack Ford on May 15, 2012 at 4:30 pm
RightWingWatch has uncovered a clip of Mitt Romney speaking at an event known as Liberty Sunday in 2006 alongside anti-gay hate group leaders like Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council, Don Wildmon of the American Family Association, and James Dobson, formerly of Focus on the Family. In his speech, Romney attacked the Massachusetts Supreme Court for its marriage equality decision, warning that there would be severe consequences for children:
A childs development is enhanced by the nurturing of both genders. Every child deserves a mother and a father. Of course, the principle burden of this courts ruling doesnt fall on adults; it falls on children. Were asked to change the state birth certificate to prevent heterocentricity mother and father will become Parent A and Parent B. An elementary school teacher reads to her second-graders from a book titled The King and the King [sic] about a prince who marries a prince. And a second-graders father is denied the right to have his daughter taken out of that classroom while the book is being read.[...]
The price of same-sex marriage is paid by the children. Our fight for marriage then should focus on the needs of children, not the rights of adults.

(108,959 posts)because they haven't seen a place for themselves in the world? Aren't those children paying a price?
What about the children raised by gay parents in traditional marriages -- i.e., gay people in unhappy marriages to straight people? Aren't those children paying a price?

(1,788 posts)Religious folks, that gay couple can't raise kids properly, and single and divorced parent are unable to do it also. Hate to tell him, but he is wrong. I wasn't raise by gay parents, but a single mom during the '70's. We all came out fIne. I am getting really sick of this language. Before it was called "broken homes," my home wasn't broken and there is nothing wrong with gay parents.

(30,439 posts)What about them? Not only do many heterosexual marriages end in divorce, but many kids are being raised by one parent. What about the polygamy within the Mormon faith? Huh?
What an asshole.

(297 posts)I only read the transcript of MR's comments (hate watching online videos) and I haven't read the transcript of the court ruling (too lazy) but I seriously doubt that the supreme court of Massachusettes decided that the constituion requires gay people to marry. ``allows'' I would buy, but it's unfathomable to me that a state supreme court justice would come to the ``requires'' conclusion. but then, I went to a state school, not Harvard, so <sarcasm>I'm sure MR's comprehension of the English language exceeds mine</sarcasm>
the part about marriage being for the kids, I'd love to see what his legal precedent for that comment is as well. let's make sure this story gets propagated to all the childless couples out there.

(7,162 posts)Being raised Mormon. It generally is far more harmful to a child than being raised by gay parents.

(23,720 posts)when one believes that he will himself will inherit a planet and become a God, children become a very important part of your marriage(s).
It's crazy, but it's true.
