GM making 600 new hires at Lansing plant to build Cadillac ATS

General Motors Co. will hire a majority of new-to-GM employees as it adds a second shift at its Lansing Grand River assembly plant to build the Cadillac ATS, a plant official said Tuesday.

The Detroit automaker has already hired 460 of the about 600 workers it will need for the second shift and has already identified the rest of those new hires, said Erin Davis, a Lansing Grand River plant spokeswoman.

On Tuesday, a group of 15 new plant workers went through a simulated work environment at GM's Lansing Delta Township plant, where they learned about safety, quality and teamwork on a mini assembly line with wooden cars and parts.

The hands-on training — part of four to six weeks that new GM manufacturing employees go through — will help workers like single mom Kendra Schaub, 29, of Westphalia in what she hopes is a long career with GM.
