Java Junkies, raise your cup if you are wrong in all the right ways......

(Bloomberg) Coffee, caffeinated or decaffeinated, appears to extend the lives of people who drink it daily, a U.S. study found.

Men who drank 2 to 3 cups a day had a 10 percent chance of outliving those who drank no coffee, while women had a 13 percent advantage, according to research published today in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The study by researchers at the National Cancer Institute is the largest to compare coffee drinkers with those who avoid it to determine whether the beverage can delay the risk of dying from ailments such as heart disease, diabetes or respiratory illness, said Neal Freedman, the lead study author. It’s unclear why coffee may be beneficial and more research is needed to study that question, he said.

The results “offer a little bit of reassurance to coffee drinkers who like drinking coffee that it won’t affect health,” said Freedman, an investigator at the NCI’s Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics in Rockville, Maryland, in a May 14 telephone interview. “It doesn’t seem to increase one’s risk of dying.” .................(more)

Seriously, though - I'm a kidney patient and while I'm not to have much cola, I can have as much coffee as I want. Black coffee is a traditional treatment for an asthma attack (it works for me when I've forgotten my stupid rescue inhaler). What can't coffee do?

That's 3+ mugs worth. A half teaspoon of sugar and a pinch of salt.

Anything is better than the 4-5 Dr. Peppers I used to drink per day.

At least it does with the Costco whole bean Columbian.

IMO it makes coffee taste orders of magnitude better, and it's a good conversation starter.

percolator. Just a smidge of salt enhances all sorts of flavors.

I don't like sweet coffee, but that might be just enough to really enhance the coffee.

Swedes are great coffee drinkers. My grampap used to get his cup of percolated coffee (always had some grounds in it), dip his spoon in the coffee to wet the spoon, then dip that spoon in the sugar. It was just enough.

No sugar, with or without cream, though I do love my lattes. Love 'good' premium coffee but I'm unlikely to turn down the regular "joe"...

I do question the decaff findings, but perhaps the antioxidant levels or some other compound is at play.

Since I find decaff to be the coffee equivalent of alcohol-free beer in terms of equivalent "taste," I'll stick with the real deal as long as possible.

I like my coffee "chewable" (that means REALLY DARK)...they can take my 'leaded' from me when they pry the mug from my cold dead fingers!!!!

He said it was the #1 addiction in the US. I said OK. Really even thought about it. Got home and made my afternoon coffee and enjoyed it immensely. Like mine chewy too - not burned but powerfully dark and rich - good Italian if I can find it!

I drink a few cups nearly every morning but studies like this are usually skewed to put the best possible light on coffee 'lovers'.

Honestly, a diet of fruits and vegetables will do more for one's health than drinking coffee.

The fact that one thing is good for you, doesn't mean that the second thing that is ALSO good for you means nothing.

Taking fish oil every day will benefit your health. That doesn't mean you shouldn't eat fruits & vegetables.

Not eating beef, a food, will benefit your health. That doesn't mean you should just give up beef and eat anything else you want, Twinkies included.

Whatever you can name to eat, drink, or ingest for health, there is always something that at some time, someone, somewhere thinks is better, or has proven is better.

Being free of stress is good for your health. But that is not food, either.
