As much as I bash Obama, he is the only thing standing between us...
...and the abyss of RW insanity. I may bitch about him sucking up to the Banksters at times, but the alternative is much, much worse. This is not an election between Left and Right, it is an election between sanity and insanity.

and assuming that he can keep us away from the abyss, the 2016 election will be a whole different ball game, since Biden is not going to run and the Republicans can run a fresh face who doesn't have the obvious baggage that Romney does.

27. Yes, even if Obama is re-elected, 2016 will be a different ballgame
It is NOT crazy to be thinking 4 years ahead.
And I'm not counting unhatched chickens. Geez. I wrote "even if". That implies a measure of doubt. But enough about semantics, take a look at precedence. Even if Obama is re-elected, barring an emergency he is almost certainly not going to take any bold initiatives, at least none that will help the general public. If historical precedent and his own actions are any indication, he will likely be "treading water" if he wins. Moreover, precedent indicates that, if Obama is re-elected, he will lose seats in one or both houses of Congress in the mid-terms. Furthermore, there has only been ONE TIME in the entire post-Civil War history of the Democratic Party when the party has won more than two presidential elections in a row-- and that was in the period 1932-48. On top of that, there is no one in the Democratic Party today who really stands out from the crowd as strong presidential timber. So 2016 (assuming that Obama wins this year) will in all likelihood mean a clean slate for both sides, which historically favors the Republicans. On top of that, the party that wins a presidential election generally picks up seats in Congress. So no, it is NOT crazy to be thinking ahead to 2016. |

45. 2016 election?
If the President is re-elected there is a very good chance that he may get to appoint one, or two, maybe even three or four SCOTUS justices. I believe 5 of them are in their 70s now. If that happens there's a good chance that Citizens United will be overturned. This is all the more reason to fight for President Obama's re-election as we certainly don't want a repug making those appointments.

52. Amen (on the SCOTUS issue)
Ginsburg is turning 80 this year, Breyer is 73(?)....and more interestingly, both Scalia and Kennedy are in their mid-70s now as well. If ONE conservative justice retires and Obama appoints his successor.....the LIBERALS WILL HAVE A MAJORITY ON THE SUPREME COURT.
![]() HOWEVER, if Romney is elected, the conservative seats will remain in conservative hands while Ginsburg and Breyer will be replaced with another Scalia and Alito, and conservatives will solidify their majority to 7-2 (and it will remain that way for decades). ![]() ![]() ![]() That alone is enough reason for me to vote for President Obama. |

The best argument for supporting this president IMO is the fact that as many as 4 supremes will be replaced in the near future. We already have an activist court that seated the worst president in my lifetime just because it could and we've suffered through the result. Another four conservative appointments will mean the Republican dystopia you have in your nightmares. In just a few years citizens united shifted the political landscape. Guess what? That's just the appetizer before the main course of Republican lobster dripping in butter sauce shows up. I hate to think what kind of America our kids will see if that happens. |

16. ...
For many decades I have lived in a very progressive pocket of a red state that has slowly gone purple/blue. I have been sheltered from the outright racism that has been an underlying boiling point for so many Americans.
I am ashamed & stunned at the bigotry. Ashamed for them & their bigotry & ashamed, also, for me, to some level, for not seeing the scope of this insidious disease & how pervasive it is in our culture, even today. I am so thankful to live in a pocket that is more liberal, but I realize that I must be aware & offer help in areas where liberalism isn't so prevalent. A few weeks ago there was a thread - not clear on the details, but I think it discussed a recent Bill Maher show where Bill & a guest discussed how the status quo machine would pick up on an Obama loss as "See, a black man just couldn't cut it." I am soooooo NOT Obama's biggest fan. but this talking point will affect ALL minorities, not just blacks. (on edit: For decades) I don't have words to express my hatred of the status quo/right wing machine that controls this country & it's dialog. And as inadequate as I see the Democratic Party's response to the extreme right wing shift, I will, once again, vote for the lesser of two evils. ![]() ===== Before Dennis Miller became a total fuckhead, he had a surprisingly, righteous rant on one of his HBO shows about bigotry. He said (paraphrased), "It's stupid to hate someone for the color of their skin, when if you take 5 minutes and just talk to them, you will find plenty of VALID reasons to hate them." Sort of a misanthropes way of looking at humanity, but I can relate. ![]() |

22. I agree. Obama is the only sane choice for President in 2012
But how about 2016? Whether Obama wins or not, there is another election coming up. As Democrats, we will have to continue working and donating money to the cause. There will never be a time to sleep on the job. The stakes are entirely too high. With Ryan's tax plan to destroy the country and Romney's total lack of knowledge of foreign affairs, we can't rest.
On a personal level, I can't seem to wrap my head around the idea that there are people (teapartiers) who want to adopt tax and other legislation that will result in the rendering of the social fabric. Is there a master plan to cull the herd? Is it their plan that if one has enough money, one can avoid the selection and destruction plans? There is a lot of reluctance to draw any comparisons to Nazis, but step back and take a look. Nazis culled the herd of disabled, racial minorities and a religious group. Ryan's tax plan will cull the herd of minorities, the elderly and disabled. At the basis is a group of people who suffer from the delusion that they are superior and have the right to adopt plans that will have a disproportionate negative affect on groups that they deem inferior or unworthy. Damn, it's getting late and I'm starting to ramble........... |

49. Culling the herd
You raise legitimate and scary points so let's just concentrate on getting the President re-elected so that he might have the opportunity to appoint at least a couple of SCOTUS justices. Five of them are in their 70s now and they're only going to get older. If he can appoint enough of them over the next four years to switch that 5-4 regressive majority to a more progressive one, Citizens United might be overturned and the country might be saved from the fast-closing corporate fascism you've rightly pointed out in our rearview mirror. If reminds me of something the late great Negro league pitcher Satchel Paige said: "Don't look back, something might be gaining on you." We got to look forward and work hard for the President's re-election so that we can pull far ahead of that frightening specter looming in rearview.

25. I briefly (BRIEFLY) toyed with the idea of
voting Dem Socialist. Then I watched one of the Repuke debates (thanks ProSense) and it scared me straight in a hurry.
This year I will go to the polls, not to vote for Obama but to vote against the Repigs. It's my civic duty. |

26. Yes it is and spot on
Only difference is I don't bash Obama but other than that you are right as right can be. You see I've seen it this way from day one of his Presidency.

29. Agreed. But at what point do we make our move
toward a civilized society, and not just "not as bad"?

31. The crazy has to be gotten rid of first.
Basically the crazy Right must be defeated before we can reverse the rightward slide of American politics.

47. That is how I feel
My grade for Obama is just a C+, just a little better than President Clinton. But I mostly post positive things about defeating Romney here. I know Romney will do the Tea Party's bidding without batting an eyelash. I really think this is who the real Romney is. I post complaints, but not as much here.

50. So perhaps it is time to tone down some of the bashing
and give objections as constructive criticism while pitching in to GOTV this November. Otherwise, it will be insanity. I'd like to see us put our efforts in getting him reelected and putting people in congress who are sane and reasonable and will help him get things done. Give him a working congress. All I see coming up now are teabagger nutjobs.

57. Why is that a realization?
Duh.
Fuck! Most people who feel that way don't get that bullshit "realization" and that's the biggest threat to Democracy. Don't bash Obama because he's not liberal or progressive enough. Let him play his cards. Fuck I hate you "Obama doesn't stand his ground, Obama's not progressive enough" fucking assholes! Obama is wise. You impatient liberals are almost as bad as the fucking Tea-Baggers. |
