A word from Brigham Young on Adam's "wives" and how sleeping with blacks will get you killed

And with no further ado, I give you Brigham Young. (And I checked the quotes on Google, they're real.)

On polygamy:

"Now if any of you will deny the plurality of wives, and continue to do so, I promise that you will be damned," (Journal of Discourses, vol. 3, p. 266). Also, "The only men who become Gods, even the Sons of God, are those who enter into polygamy," (Journal of Discourses, vol. 11, p. 269).
Eve was "one" of Adam's "wives," plural:

"Now hear it, O inhabitants of the earth, Jew and Gentile, Saint and sinner! When our father Adam came into the garden of Eden, he came into it with a celestial body, and brought Eve, one of his wives, with him. He helped to make and organize this world. He is Michael, the Archangel, the Ancient of Days! about whom holy men have written and spoken -- He is our Father, and our God, and the only God with whom we have to do. Every man upon the earth, professing Christians or non professing, must hear it, and will know it sooner or later." (Journal of Discourses, vol. 1, p. 50).

It's Adam and Eve and Eve and Eve and Eve and Eve, not Adam and Steve.

Oh, and this just in: God will kill you on the spot if you have sex with a black person:

"You see some classes of the human family that are black, uncouth, uncomely, disagreeable and low in their habits, wild, and seemingly deprived of nearly all the blessings of the intelligence that is generally bestowed upon mankind....Cain slew his brother. Cain might have been killed, and that would have put a termination to that line of human beings. This was not to be, and the Lord put a mark upon him, which is the flat nose and black skin." (Journal of Discourses, vol. 7, p. 290). "In our first settlement in Missouri, it was said by our enemies that we intended to tamper with the slaves, not that we had any idea of the kind, for such a thing never entered our minds. We knew that the children of Ham were to be the "servant of servants," and no power under heaven could hinder it, so long as the Lord would permit them to welter under the curse and those were known to be our religious views concerning them." (Journal of Discourses, vol. 2, p. 172). "Shall I tell you the law of God in regard to the African race? If the white man who belongs to the chosen seed mixes his blood with the seed of Cain, the penalty, under the law of God, is death on the spot. This will always be so." (Journal of Discourses, vol. 10, p. 110).

If they really want to get into the Rev.Wright thing..........

All is fair game!

Their are other reasons why Romney should be banished to history's dust bucket of wannabees.
Religion need not be one of them.

But the repugs appear to want to call the game, and as such.......

All is fair game!

I'd play it from Romney's right.

Fundies think Mormonism is a cult. Some of them are worried that they might end up in hell if they vote for a Mormon. And they sure as hell are not going to vote for the scary secret Muslim in the White House.

And so, its this angle that I'd promote. Most on the left don't care about some one's Religion (unless they are trying to impose it on everyone else) and true Independents generally don't care either.

But the far right Fundies absolutely care. And since all the respond to is fear, I say ... scare them. Let them worry about an eternity in hell. Maybe they'll conclude that its safer to just stay home.

Just going into a non cathloic church would dam you to hell.
I out grew that.
I hope the rupgs will not play the god card, but if they do.
You're right, their's enough scary rumors out their about Mormons to scare a fundy white. Or what ever color.
I would hope not, but I think that is too much to ask for.
So turnabout will be fair play.

They see the Pope as an agent of the Anti-Christ.

The GOP works very hard to not allow these theological issues to surface. Just so that they can get "the Christians" to vote as a block.

When I was little, my family went to a Presbyterian Church. What I learned there is that everyone is going to hell. And if asked any question in Sunday school, just say "Jesus Christ" ... he's always the answer.

Most of my closest friends growing up were Catholic. So lots of times I went to mass with them, just to have something to do on Sunday morning ... and then after church ... we'd all go do something else ... sports, lunch ... something ... but basically I went for the social aspect.

As a teen, I also spent a lot of time playing basketball at a local Baptist church. I was not a member of the church. But I had friends who were members, and I was a good basketball player ... so they put me on their church team, and pretended that I was a member of their church. They took me to tournaments (some were over night events) and they paid my way. I caught on after 3 or so events. See, most of the other team members had to attend all kinds of other church events. But the coaches did not make me attend those. Then I learned that the other kids had to PAY to go to these tournaments. I never paid. My sense is that they did not want me to find out I was a "ringer" ... a strong player who should not have been allowed to play in their leagues because I was not a member of their church. The really funny thing is that the other players wished they were me. I got to play in the tournaments, and skip most of the religious stuff that they had to do. And they were not mad at me ... I was helping them win games.

Then I went to a Catholic University as an undergraduate. St Joseph's in Philly. Its a Jesuit University. And those Jesuits are some seriously smart guys. In class after class, I watched a Jesuit Priest dismantle an overly indoctrinated Catholic kid. The kid had spent 18 years at mass, knew all the "right" answers ... but could not defend a single one. Those Jesuits either helped that kid strengthen and personalize their faith, or created more questions than the kid could handle. But either way, that kid left with a faith, or a lack of faith, that was totally their own. Not something Mommy and Daddy handed them.

A few of my in-laws are of the Fundy persuasion. I can counter almost any bible passage they put forward. If they play the God card, they are in for an uncomfortable discussion.

I'm an agnostic leaning atheist .... and the Jesuits taught me well.

You can be tolerant of others beliefs, but you don't follow blindly.
Oh you pay a price. No one tells you right from wrong. You must set you're own codes.
Their ain't no putting it off until 'judgment day' if you don't follow you're own codes.
No three hail maryes and one our father will pay for your sins. You pay the price NOW.
I suspect that that those first six days was something like the creater coming up with a high level project plan and then saying the equivalent of, here you go, have fun.
Think of the Platypus. That critter makes no sense. Still the high level plan neither proscribes it or disallowed it. Like I said, have fun.
I wouldn't feel all that guilty about having been a 'ringer'. That's one of the problems with originsed religions. They seam to take advantage when ever they can.
I think you are beyond that now.

Sure, I think their was a creator. But don't look to the Bible.
Look to the math.
Look to yourself.

In the treatise, Luther describes Jews as a "base, whoring people, that is, no people of God, and their boast of lineage, circumcision, and law must be accounted as filth."[1] Luther wrote that they are "full of the devil's feces ... which they wallow in like swine,"[2] and the synagogue is an "incorrigible whore and an evil slut".[3]

Mormons held open and severely racist dogmas against African Americans until 1978. 432 years of difference. I think that span of centuries makes a difference to most people. Mitt was in his 30's and way up in the church when they held those teachings about black people. He in fact, taught those teachings to others. Into his 30's.

Well, golly, let's have a look at what African Americans were excluded from. You mean, horrors, they weren't allowed to become admitted to the various levels of priesthood in this wacky church.

But the Mormon god changed his mind in 1978, and then African Americans could be admitted to the priesthood. Prior to that, they could be members, but male African Americans could not gain admission to the two levels of priesthood that most Mormon men in good standing attain.

Okay, that's a change. Mormonism is a religion of ongoing direct revelation. Regardless of anyone's position, doctrine cannot change without a memo from god to their prophet.

Could you remind me when it was that the Roman Catholic church started admitting women to the priesthood?

Oh, that's right, women still can't be members of the Catholic priesthood. So that makes them about even with current Mormon practice.

But, back to my point, if someone was running some bizarre religion which didn't admit white people, I'd have a hard time getting upset about it.

I just don't see the great advancement of rights involved in saying, "God has spoken, and now men of all races can participate in this cockamamie nonsense."

Are they saying that Adam is their god?

This thing about needing to have more than one wife in order to be a god also seems conflicting. Wouldn't that mean that the God would have to have a wife and more than one wife? Including Jesus?

But, yes, the Mormon god has multiple wives whom he is continually impregnating to give birth to spirit babies. These spirit babies are provided with vessels in the form of human babies.

Humans have to keep having babies in order to keep the production lines moving along. Good Mormon humans eventually get their own franchise in which they have multiple spirit wives producing spirit babies for their own planet. It works like an MLM network.

8. Mormons love to tout how their faith is eternal and never changing

Young confirms this

This will always be so."
So while they may not say it out loud and while the mormons tout a newer revelation that permitted the descendents of Cain to no longer be servants and obtain the preisthood, semblance of racism hasn't dies off. NOT ONE subsequent prophet has provided a new prophets revelation that god has rescinded the requirement that a man must have many wives to enter into the kingdon of heaven. Not one has come out with a new prophecy that mixed race marriages are acceptable to God.

So two things, God's laws are not eternal and never changing, apparenty he changes his mind. Somethings are subject to change and somethings are not...apparently at the whim of whatever political and public pressures are placed on the LDS leadership.

Another interesting tid bit. Young seems to be stating that Adam is the same person as God. This Adam God theory has caused a lot of controversy and many modern day Mormons promoting that same doctrine have been reprimanded and some even excommunicated.

I'm not a big fan of organized religion, but I think there are other things we can go after Romney than this. Besides, if you look back at early Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, you can find stuff that's just as bad.
