i clocked at 273wpm, 9% faster than the national average, and answered all 3 questions correctly.

however, i am a notoriously slow reader. i like reading dense math textbooks, puzzle books, and the like because it's quite painful to process a lot of words. i loathe novels and haven't read a single one since college.

i find it VERY difficult to believe that i'm actually above the national average. in fact, i can't think of a single person i know (other than my 5-year old son) who reads slower than i do.

I'm generally a very fast reader and I did the test 3 times. The first time I got 2 questions wrong and it told me not to skim (I didn't, just the particular questions they asked didn't register). Then the next one I got all 3 questions right (it was a story I knew) and it said I was 32% slower than the national average, then I did the test again (again a story I knew) and got 66% faster than the national average. So I was all over the place.

It was either 5th or 6th grade, forget which, but I was falling behind in reading. So the teacher paired me with a cute girl in the class who was one of the best readers. Each day during reading, she and I went to the cloak room and I had to read out loud to her, and she'd read out loud to me.

I already had a crush on this girl, not that I was brave enough to say anything, but I think that motivated me. I wanted to impress her and not have her think I was a dope. And so in a couple weeks, I went from one of the worst readers, to one of the best readers. Which was dumb, because once I was one of the "best readers", the teacher ended our little cloak room sessions. DUH!!

But ever since, I've been a very fast reader.

When I was a grad student, I got a position teaching speed reading, using the machines that cover the lines down a page. And we'd do exercises in which the class has to find specific words (names, places, dates) as fast as they can. Stuff like that. I think I picked up a little speed from that ... learned a few tactics that work well with technical content.

It drives my wife crazy ... anytime we need to read something at the same time ... I finish way ahead of her, and it bugs her.

than the national average.

But the difference is, the first sample was from War of the Worlds, and I never enjoyed Vernes' style of writing, whereas the second sample was from Alice in Wonderland, a story I always enjoyed immensely.

I guess that mirrors my reading habits generally - if I start a book and can't get into it by page 50, I push on to a different book.

Most of my reading these days is right here on good ole DU. Consequently, when I read here my eyes are filled with red, so I can't really see that well!
I did take a speed reading class at a jc here in calefornia around the middle seventies, although it did help my schooling, I usually like to read slower.

Do you know how much time we waste just eating meals?

No longer for me!

Next, I'm going to enroll in Evelyn Snooze Speed Sleeping course.
