Washington Post: We have reached the George Wallace stage of the same-sex marriage fight

UPDATE: This post has been updated to include comments made by GOP candidates late Tuesday.

There's a long and not exactly auspicious history in this country of people resisting court orders aimed at defending the civil rights of minority groups.

On Tuesday, a Kentucky county clerk named Kim Davis created the basis for the latest chapter. Davis is refusing to issue marriage licenses to anyone so that she might avoid the task of having to issue or refuse to issue one to a gay or lesbian couple. Davis said in a statement released by Liberty Counsel, a Christian legal organization representing her, that her religious beliefs bar her from doing so.

override Wallace's integration of the University of Alabama. In fact, he was forcibly removed from the steps of the University when he was trying to prevent several African American students from attending classes. Wallace was violating Federal law, and that is a similar thing that is happening in Kentucky with this elected official, she is violating Federal Law.

The other issues involved, have to due with a resurgence of racism in the country that I haven't seen since the Civil Rights Act was passed. Wallace had no problem spewing out racist rhetoric, not unlike Donald Trump. There were others whose racism was more hidden, with terminology such as states rights etc., which is pretty much the republican platform today.

My point being that the clock is being turned back. We are regressing.

Ironically, later in Wallace's political career, he asked for forgiveness from the people he caused so much discrimination against, 30 years later.

Wallace was the symbol of the racist South at the time, though there were other's, Lestor Maddox comes to mind
