Mother Bear Hides In Tree For Hours After Man Shoots And Kills Her Cubs

[img][/img]

A mother black bear thought she was taking her young cubs out to find some food. Instead, she watched them die.

Early Tuesday morning, the young bear family found some unsecured trash cans in Evergreen, Colorado, and began to rummage through them. They were spotted by the homeowner, Daniel C. Williams. Instead of leaving the bears alone or calling officials, Williams decided to scare them off.

He first fired two rounds of rubber buckshot at them, both of which missed. When his dog slipped outside, he fired a round of live ammunition at the cubs, hitting both of them at once and a neighbor's window.

One of the young cubs died instantly as his mother watched. The other was severely injured and had to be euthanized.

UPDATE: The Jefferson County District Attorney's Office filed charges against Daniel C. Williams on Thursday, including two felony counts and six misdemeanor counts. He could face up to 4.5 years in prison and significant fines.

He leaves his trash out. The locals think he was baiting the bears just so he could shoot them.

Bears coming this far into town are rare, but not unheard of.

Williams is too damned stupid to own a gun. He's too damned stupid to live outside an institution. I hope he's not allowed to plea bargain down.

that it is not OK to kill things just because you feel like it!

This is one place where I see stiffer penalties could go very far.

No one is to blame but us - us humans. We have been decimating the habitats of wild animals for decades now.

Now, so many of us act surprised when wild animals come into our neighborhoods and cities looking for food.

We are reaping what we have sowed.

…this makes me incredibly sad.

I really feel for her.

Black bears are supposed to be non-threatening too, and afraid of humans. These bears were not charging him. I think the earlier poster who lives near him is right--he was probably baiting them so he could fire his gun and kill something. Piece of shit.

And who shoots at bear cubs, anyway? Baby animals.

He deserves prison and I hope he goes there. Sick person.

So sorry, mama bear. Can you imagine the grief she feels?

Unnecessary cruelty to animals. Those little cubs weren't a danger - and poor mama.

Her hiding in that tree is so sad.

Or you keep your cans in the garage....if not you will have bears in the trash.

30 minutes before we leave to take my favorite Bear to his pregame warmups for our 9 O'clock game.
