over the past 25 years. 24 cops have been killed to date. How many of them were killed by African-Americans to warrant this ridiculous attack on BlackLivesMatter?
I don't plan to forget those two killed by white supremacists who had been involved in the Bundy stand off last year.
The same cannot be said about citizens killed by cops. Those numbers are up.
Police are murdering innocent people and lying about it - that is a fact. Give thanks for technology!!!

(6,226 posts)Another rightie hoping to start their teaparty revolution by killing 2 cops.
but remember African-Americans and Muslims are never mentally ill (like the one who killed the cop in Texas) - that's blacklivesmatter and don't you forget it. There are no lone wolves in those groups - according the the establishment.

(32,029 posts)and I think we should be talking about cameras and other methods (training) etc to make things better.
We are mourning in Houston though - and I am just as willing to stand up for this family as I was willing to stand up for Trayvon (which I did). This officer was killed when he stopped to put gas in his cruiser (not in a dispute - some guy just targeted him because he was a cop). The photo is from the funeral yesterday.
We've got to find a way to go forward without shoot-outs in the street (which is where we seem to be heading)

(34,582 posts)for selling loose cigarettes, failing to use a blinker, etc, etc. Yes, the cop should not have been targeted, but black people shouldn't be targeted by law enforcement. Cops need to start cleaning their ranks and cleaning up their act. They have been doing this shit for decades, and now we are finally seeing visual proof of what the community has been saying for years. There are two ways to get rid of a bomb- diffuse it, or blow it up.

(32,029 posts)it's got to be dealt with in terms of cameras wherever we can put them and other systemic changes. I'm open to whatever changes people think we should make. I do know that in Houston the prosecutors/police are doing neighborhood meetings to encourage dialogue. Obviously that's not enough if people are still willing to target others (in the Houston case this week it wasn't an attempted arrest or anything like that - the guy just shot the cop at the gas station while in uniform). But that's what you call "blow it up". Who is going to talk to you after you do that?

(32,029 posts)of course. I was just focusing on preventative measures so folks don't get shot in the first place. Like everyone has noted when we white folks are stopped for a traffic violation we are not in fear for our lives - and that is the difference. This has to be something that starts at the training level and currently police seem to think they can get away with whatever they choose to do. That's a pervasive attitude as opposed to just a few bad apples.

(268,844 posts)What they're not talking about is how the numbers are up of African Americans being killed by cops for some very suspect reasons.
Logical
(22,457 posts)But I don't want people to lie about how black life's matter or police complaints are causing a war on cops. It is bullshit.

(34,582 posts)it all started with that "All lives matter" BS. I have a couple FB friends that are cops, and am quite sick of seeing pics of cops that say "His life matters", or kids of cops with signs that say "My daddy's life matters". Hello- people aren't systematically hunting out, beating down, and killing cops, and doing it under the guise of law enforcement.

Despite urgent warnings from police and others about a war on cops allegedly linked to the Black Lives Matter protest movement, statistics show 2015 is in fact shaping up to be one of the safest years for law enforcement in a generation.
According to the Officer Down Memorial Page (ODMP), which keeps data on officer deaths going back over 100 years, 24 officers have been shot and killed by suspects this year. This puts the US on pace for 36 non-accidental, firearm-related police fatalities in 2015. Each one of such deaths is a tragedy for the officers killed, their families and the communities they serve, but this would be the lowest total in 25 years, aside from 2013 which saw 31 such deaths.
A series of recent high-profile police deaths has sparked much of the rhetoric tying violence against police to anti-police-brutality protesters. On Friday, Harris County sheriffs deputy Darren Goforth was gunned down from behind while filling his car at a gas station. The suspect, Shannon Miles, was arrested shortly thereafter and charged with capital murder. Miles has a history of severe mental illness and was found mentally incompetent to stand trial in 2012.

Remember though - only white lone wolves (aka white supremacists) suffer from mental illness

(22,336 posts)It would also be interesting to compare how dangerous being a police officer is to the danger of other jobs. It isn't the only job where people get killed.

Simple. It isn't dangerous. They just want you to think it is.
(Ah well....different source, anyway.
