Sinclair Lewis: "When Fascism comes to America...

it will be wrapped in a flag and carrying a cross". This sticks in my mind watching Kentucky Clerk Kim Davis and her supporters in the GOP.

Note: although this quote is often attributed to Sinclair Lewis but the source has not been confirmed

The religious right is against the ropes in America, and is trying very hard to avoid the fact that its aims are at odds with the Constitution, as well as common sense and basic decency.

I'm always surprised when conservatives take an argument and perfectly invert it, but it makes a kind of sense, I guess, for people who take a sense of entitlement in the right to punish and exclude people different than themselves.

Still, I don't think, "Religious freedom means the right to viciously abuse people" is going to fly this time.

What's more interesting culturally is that it's becoming harder and harder to avoid the fact that the primary religions in the United States, if taken literally, are racist, sexist, and homophobic, and that the prevailing morality does not accept any of those things.

He's pulling the Church into the 21st century by eschewing dogma and preaching love rather than hate.

Will the next pope try to walk back those gains?

I know nothing about organized religions and would welcome feedback.
