... Williams' musical style holds up just fine, fundamental as it is to the continuing dynasty of bro-country on the charts; its his politics that have fossilized, and try as you might, they cant be avoided ... As a native Texan with ancestral roots in the Confederacy, I was perfectly willing to ignore the audience members draped in the symbol of the pro-slavery South, and to excuse an Obama sucks! call from the rows nearby ... But its much harder to overcome the opposing worldview of an artist when the politics behind the person have taken over the entire persona ... This country's sure as hell been goin' down the drain/We know what we need/We know who to blame/United Socialist States of America/How do you like that name? ... It wasnt racism or xenophobia that weighed on me ... Instead, it was the feeling of contempt for rational discourse that brought me down ...

(9,350 posts)It may be the case that his name is the real reason for his celebrity. I know he had the "Are You Ready For Some Football" song, but did he have any other big hits? It is very possible that if his name was anything other than Hank Williams Jr. he would not be a major celebrity.

(28,252 posts)He can hardly put out a song without some Daddy reference in it. Absent his famous father, Jr. would be playing venues which match his talents: Holiday Inn lounges come to mind.
