(78,249 posts)Okay, Janet Napolitano is preferable to this chicken guy, but she, too, had no prior academic experience whatsoever. To date, she has spent her entire term trying to shove still more tuition hikes down Gov. Brown's throat. Thankfully, Jerry is having none of it.

Then there's the City College of San Francisco (community college). The regional accrediting agency has been trying to revoke its accreditation (!), in large part because it has resisted the nationwide trend away from faculty governance and toward layers of corporate-style management such as the chicken guy.

unaffordable and out-of reach for the middle class.
College tuition has increased more than ten-fold since I went to college in the 1980's. What in the hell are they doing with all of that extra money? Why do they need so much more?
Isn't it more important to keep a college education affordable?
Tuition was $600 when I attended the University of Iowa in the early 1980's. It's now $8,000. $27,000 for out-of-state students.
A loaf of bread was about $1.50 in the 1980's. If bread prices had risen as college tuition has, a loaf of bread would be $15.
Seriously. Why do they need all of that extra money, especially if more people are attending college?

and having more Republicans certainly doesn't help. However, there are corporate-toe-sucking Dems who are more than happy to appease our corporate-toe-sucking Governor Brandstad.
Harreld was approved by the regents unanimously, despite him having no experience and a 3 percent approval by the faculty-student body. Furthermore, Boston Market declared bankruptcy shortly after Harreld left the company. Not exactly evidence of success!

When the Republicans took over state government here in 2012 they started packing the Board of Governors
for the University:
The BOG now has 19 Republicans, 14 Democrats and two unaffiliated members; after new members take office July 1, the board will have 29 Republicans, two Democrats and two members who are registered unaffiliated. (Political party affiliation could not be determined for another two of the new members.)
North Carolinas Senate and House each elect eight members to the board every two years; board members serve four-year terms. This spring, the Senate elected seven Republicans and one Democrat; the House chose five Republicans, one Democrat and two whose political affiliation is undetermined.

I think there were several more extreme right wing members appointed this past spring (2015) and this was after the President
of the Board was ousted last January. http://www.dailytarheel.com/article/2015/01/unc-system-president-tom-ross-forced-to-resign-friday
The Republicans in this state have had their eye on the university system for a long time and they are determined to turn it into
a vocational prep training system rather than a place where people learn to think for themselves.

(2,841 posts)Money-hungry college presidents and their fat-cat underlings. Radical professors stifling free speech in the classroom. College sports taking priority over education. More classes being added to syllabi, increasing costs to students. Faculty layoffs and wages being cut for service workers on campus.
Money. Politics. Sports. Image.
And the students suffer under all of this bullshit. The college bubble is the next to burst and I tell ya it's gonna be worst than the housing crisis.
