Senate Democrats voted to uphold the hard-fought nuclear accord with Iran on Thursday, overcoming ferocious GOP opposition and delivering President Barack Obama a legacy-making victory on his top foreign policy priority.
A disapproval resolution for the agreement fell two votes short of the 60 needed to move forward as Democratic and independent senators banded together against it. Although House Republicans continued to pursue eleventh-hour strategies to derail the international accord, the outcome in the Senate guaranteed that the disapproval legislation would not reach Obama's desk.
As a result the nuclear deal will move forward unchecked by Congress, an improbable win by Obama in the face of unanimous opposition from Republicans who control Capitol Hill, GOP candidates seeking to replace him in the Oval Office and the state of Israel and its allied lobbyists in the U.S.

"We have one goal in mind, shared by many nations around the world: to stop Iran from developing a nuclear weapon," said Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, the No. 2 Senate Democrat. "I believe this agreement comes as close to achieving that as we can hope for at this moment."

Thank you President Obama, Sec. Kerry, Democrats and Independents!
Today's Senate vote on the Iran deal is a historic step toward preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. The world is safer for it.

(16,286 posts)this for a long time.
And the reason the teaparty opposes it has nothing to do with a country they couldn't find on a map, it has to do with Obama being successful.

(58,785 posts)the most prominent journalists of Truman's era all chose to consider him totally incompetent and unfit for office -- and described him that way to the nation well past his presidency. Those shabby fools included the most admired reporter of that era, Edward R. Murrow. Pack journalism then and now, and today's crowd is totally unashamed of their safe and gemutlich group-think, as corrupt and irresponsible as the rest of the political climate they're part of.
BTW, historians now consider Truman one of our best presidents -- as one discussion by presidential historians suggested, worthy of at least a profile on Mt. Rushmore.

(58,785 posts)I look forward to future evaluations of Obama's presidency -- long after the media have moved on to snap at the heels of others. I'm confident he's been good for America, but how good?
America needs you
Harry Truman
Harry could you please come home?
Things are lookin' bad
I know you would be mad
To see your favorite men
Prevail upon the land you love
America's wondering
How we got here
Harry all we get is lies
We're gettin' safer cars
Rocket ships to mars
From men who'd sell us out
To get themselves a piece of power
We'd love to hear you speak your mind
In plain and simple ways
Call a spade a spade
Just like you did back in the days
You would play piano
Each mornin' walk a mile
Speak of what was goin' down
With honesty and style
America's calling
Harry Truman
Harry you know what to do
The world is turnin' round and losin' lots of ground
Oh Harry is there somethin'
We can do to save the land we love?
Oh whoa whoa whoa
America's calling
Harry Truman
Harry you know what to do
The world is turnin' 'round
And losin' lots of ground
Harry is there somethin'
We can do to save the land we love
Oh, Harry is there somethin'
We can do to save the land we love
Harry
Harry is there somethin'
We can do to save the land we love

(6,409 posts)Remember when they tried to phony up the personal horror stories about people who got screwed because of Obamacare? The best they could do was some woman in Michigan who saved money on her prescriptions, but claimed she might not be able to pay if the bills came at the wrong time. Or something like that. Weak sauce. They're hoping the Iran deal work better for them, allows them to spread their lies before the truth comes out. Problem is, the public is onto them now, and most people just laugh it off as more right wing propaganda. With over a year to go before the election, I think they will hit their peak too soon, and be on a precipitous descent by next November.

(32,723 posts)Republicans are on the record for telling Iran that as soon as they get back into power they intend to go to war.
They intend to keep their 80s boogyman to honor Saint Ronny of the blessed Chimp Bottle.
I keep reminding people when Reagan was in office we were all supposed to be terrified of Colombian Drug Lords.
"Miami Vice" was fiction, so was "24".
Oh, and Kiefer Sutherland is no Don Johnson.
