Maybe it takes this happening to a celebrity for things to change.

In 2012, a Queens man said, Officer James Frascatore pulled him over for a broken taillight, opened his car door and punched him three times in the mouth, unprovoked.
The following year, another Queens resident recalled, Officer Frascatore beat him in his driveway during an arrest after he started to go into his home to retrieve an identification card.
Those accounts, both made by black men, came to light after a rough arrest by the same officer on Wednesday in which he wrapped an arm around the neck of the retired tennis star James Blake and threw him to the sidewalk after mistaking him for a suspect in a credit card fraud investigation.
The New York Police Department released surveillance video of the arrest on Friday, offering a minute-long glimpse of the manhandling of a biracial celebrity by a white plainclothes officer that compelled police officials to swiftly strip the officer of his gun and badge.
More including video of the assault and battery of James Blake: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/12/nyregion/video-captures-new-york-officer-manhandling-tennis-star-during-arrest.html
I'm glad Frascatore is finally being investigated but why did it take his attack on a celebrity for that to happen?
In the Diggs case, he assaulted Mr. Diggs, then refused to give his name and badge number to Diggs' wife. He lied on his police report and that was only determined because Mrs. Diggs had video of the end of the attack on her husband. That was covered in another story about this vicious storm trooper, but I don't have the link handy.

(34,441 posts)Obviously Blake wasn't involved and the process the cop used was outrageous even used with the right suspect.
But James Blake is the absolute perfect person to fight this battle he didn't choose. Handsome, smart, calm, well liked on the tour, well informed about and experienced with racism. Also he has advocated for LBGT (see his comments in response to a player's saying he wouldn't want his daughter to play on the WTA)...and he has the time and the money as well as media access (he works on TV commentary sometimes) to battle. In some ways he is an Obama of tennis.
He won't file a lawsuit for himself. But he may file one to force the police to change its procedures if he can't find another way to make change. I would bet on him.
By the way, the police were damn lucky they didn't injure him badly. He had serious neck and back problems previously and this assault could have caused horrific damage.

(2,672 posts)The cop could have just gone up to them, question them, and then determine if that's the person of interest. But nooooooooo! The cop had to be a macho he-man that was going to save the day from credit card fraud.
Fuck da police.

(1,151 posts)This issue will cause the NYC police to go into a tantrum, turn their backs on the Mayor, refuse to do their jobs and look to the rest of us like a bunch of bullies who when told to stop being assholes they act like a bunch of spoiled 6 year old children.
The NYC police ar completely out of control. I read Matt Tabbis book, Divide' it was stunning. They drive around in vans arresting any black person they see for no reason. Throw them in Rikers Island, where they sit and wait for months to see a judge.
In America. This is what we have become. Dont tell me we are not fascist. I heard the CBS sports radio guy yesterday saying he saw this and did not think it was that bad. He said that just what it looks like when they arrest someone. He is an idiot, thats not what it looks like when a police officer serves a warrant.
When I was very young, I learned a lesson. I was arrested ,interrogated , roughed up pretty good, charged with disturbing the peace, paid a fifty dollar fine and learned a lesson. But Im a white guy so let me go. There is no reason for this kind of un professional behavior.

(65,616 posts)They've had forever to do so. They seem to think problems just vanish if you are a cop and fuck up and deserve to get fired. Of course the cop that tackled him has a horrible record...but that is okay, cop apologists will be here soon to explain why we are all deviants.
