... Calling it discrimination against descendants of Confederate soldiers, Jay Owens, 48, of Waterford accused the career center administration of trampling upon the First Amendment by not allowing students to wear rebel flag paraphernalia upon their person or fly a flag upon their vehicles while on school grounds ...
"When I walked into class that day I was pulled out of class by my teachers and told to change it," said Kylor Denton, 17, of Waterford. "When I refused she said to turn it inside out, I refused again and was taken to the office where the policy was explained to me and I ended up changing my shirt" ...
Dennis Blatt, superintendent of the Washington County Career Center, said while the board may consider the provided input in executive session and he respects the opinions of those who spoke, he does not believe allowing the controversial flag to be displayed at the school is appropriate. He said he stands by the previous decision to uphold current policy.
"I respect where they are coming from," Blatt said. "But here at the career center we serve a diverse group of students and there are those who would feel put down and demeaned by the display of that symbol. We want everyone here to be afforded with the same respect and I believe this is the best way to do that."
