Terrified Dolphin Throws Himself At Man's Feet To Escape Hunters

Taiji, Japan, is a bloodbath once again — and a heartbreaking video captures the final moments of the hunt's first victims.

Ric O'Barry, founder of The Dolphin Project and star of the 2009 film "The Cove," was in Japan to witness the first days of the Taiji dolphin hunt on Friday. And an encounter he had with one of the victims left even a veteran like him shaken.

In the video, a panicked family of Risso's dolphins is shown swimming frantically around a tiny sea pen, having been herded from the deeper waters into the makeshift slaughterhouse. They swim up and down the enclosure, tangling themselves in the netted walls as they seek to escape — a few swim beneath the nets but end up on the side close to shore instead of the open ocean.

If some people can't ask that, then what they do isn't "OK".

Hunting whales as well. There is no need for it, and putting whale meat in a can, and feeding it to kids, who don't really like it in the first place..they just need to stop this.. I don't know what it will take, perhaps protests like they protested nuclear power, and will Abe's government listen? Probably not...but it has to stop.

That and the whales. What's with the Japanese when it comes to cruelty like this. And the Chinese are even worse. The stuff they do is just god awful.

factory farming every year. This hunt is horrible, but at least it is not months and years of the cruelest confinement imaginable like factory-raised animals endure. Pigs are incredibly intelligent animals, as are dolphins.

not wanting to believe they condone such atrocities.

There are a few good articles written about this heinous practice, and most say the majority of the people aren't even aware of it, which is rather shocking to me. I suppose it could be rather similar to how people in the US aren't aware of the heinous practices which lead to the pre-packaged meat bought at the store.

4. THE HIGHLY LUCRATIVE DOLPHIN CAPTIVITY INDUSTRY IS TRULY WHAT MOTIVATES THE SLAUGHTER.
“A dead dolphin… is worth about $500 in meat. A wild dolphin,” like those captured in Taiji during the slaughter, “to keep in an aquarium alive can be worth over $130,000.”

5. A SMALL GROUP OF PEOPLE, NOT THE ENTIRE COUNTRY OF JAPAN, IS RESPONSIBLE.
Many Japanese citizens aren’t informed of the practice, motivation and effects of the dolphin slaughter — not even the people in Taiji. “We printed copies of The Cove in Japanese, and actually put them in every mail slot in every house in Taiji,” O’Barry says of Dolphin Project’s on-the-ground efforts to change this horrific practice. “I would personally relate the numbers of slaughtered dolphins dropping to this.”

7. THE JAPANESE ARE ALSO TAKING ACTION AGAINST THE SLAUGHTER.
2013 was the first year there was a Japanese activist standing up in protest at the cove. “This is about identifying and showing that it’s not all Japanese people,” says Lincoln. “There was a lot of anti-Japanese sentiment during the big whaling movement in the 1970s. All that really accomplished was that Japanese-American kids would get beat up on the playground. You can’t boycott a race of people just because of what a handful of people are doing in Taiji. That’s insane.”

8. LESS DOLPHINS ARE BEING KILLED EACH YEAR, THANKS TO AWARENESS AND GLOBAL PRESSURE.
In 2009, 2,500 dolphins were slaughtered. In 2010, 2,000. In 2012, only 800 were killed. That’s still 800 too many, but it proves that change can happen when passionate people take action.

I don't know many people who will allow themselves to be educated about the atrocities of factory farming, for example. Once they are faced with the facts, I've known people who change their eating habits.

Willful ignorance, I suppose, best describes most people.

I just finished the section on Taiji, Japan. I would highly encourage all to read this book. These creatures are not just somewhat intelligent; they have highly evolved brains and intricate social structures. They must wonder why humans, with obviously similar intelligence, are so prone to acting more like great white sharks.

You can sign a petition to the mayor of Taiji and to Prime Minister Abe here:
