The Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump on Sunday said high salaries paid to chief executives were a joke and a disgrace, often approved by company boards stacked with friends of such CEOs.
In a display of the populist rhetoric which has accompanied strong words on immigration and other Republican candidates during his rise to the top of the polls, Trump also said his tax plan, to be unveiled in the coming weeks, would cut taxes for the middle class and corporations, but for the hedge fund guys, they are going to be paying up.
The real estate mogul, who has said he plans to use his net worth of $8.7bn to fund his White House campaign, said in an interview with CBS that it was hard to tackle the question of corporate pay because too many corporate boards lacked independence.
Its disgraceful, he said. Sometimes the boards rule but I would probably say its less than 10%; and you see these guys making enormous amounts of money. Its a total and complete joke.
In particular Trump mentioned Macys, which in July stopped selling his menswear line after he described migrants from Mexico as drug-runners and rapists.

He's showing they can't generate excitement for corporatism, which is what their billionaire sponsors insist upon.
Unfortunately, he's also showing that belligerence and nativism still work for the Republican base.
But maybe that doesn't help them either?

(12,151 posts)And while I agree his demagoguery is dangerous in its own right, I think it's interesting and possibly important that he is disrupting the current conservative ideology by doing things like supporting Planned Parenthood and criticizing CEO pay.
He is a hand grenade in their cozy barrel of billionaire - sponsored fish, and they have no idea what to do with him.

(27,315 posts)Trump basically said he did not think anybody could do anything about that, and the lines of his tax plans are exactly the same as Bush.
But he said that CEO's pay is disgraceful (including his?). And some people on our side applaud?
