How does your state rank in charity/donations

Here's a surprise - Mississippi is ranked number 2 (Utah First due to tithing):

"The average Mississippi household donated 7.2 percent of its discretionary income to charity. Residents are more likely to give cash than time: They volunteered at a rate of 21 percent, below the national average of 26 percent"

I don't by it though. I have heard that liberals are more charitable the conservative and this shows that's not the case. BS study probably done by the Christian Right.

Eight of the ten states listed at the top in philanthropy in this article also are listed in the top ten states for religiousness in this Gallup poll:

http://www.gallup.com/poll/167267/mississippi-religious-vermont-least-religious-state.aspx

Similarly, six of the ten lowest ranked states in philanthropy are also the least religious.

IOW, because donations to one's faith are tax deductible and many faiths put an emphasis on cash contributions from their members, this charitable giving test favors more religious states.
