The ghost of Rick Perrys presidential campaign may haunt his erstwhile rivals for the Republican nomination.
Though the former Texas governor folded amid fundraising turmoil, supporters running a well-funded super PAC supporting his candidacy are considering whether theres an outlet for as much as $13 million they had in the bank when Perry dropped out.
The son of one top donor to the PAC, Doug Deason, said his father tech magnate Darwin Deason -- anticipates that contributions will be returned and the committee, dubbed the Opportunity and Freedom PAC, will shutter. But Austin Barbour, a senior member of the PACs leadership, said hes still discussing options with the groups lawyers.
I think it is fair to say that we dont yet have a full understanding of what the law allows for, Barbour said in an email. Once we understand that we can talk with our donors about options.

(16,844 posts)Did they actually think that Perry was going all the way? They wanted to contribute to this disgusting joke of a political system we have, but they don't want to get fucked by it like the rest of us are. Too fucking bad. By the way, I'm pretty sure that Austin Barbour is related to Haley Barbour, so he'll be looking for his cut of the money as well.

I wonder if Perry will return any of the big donor money. He better watch his back. Some of those big donors are probably sociopathic CEOs with little empathy and a high need for revenge.

Maybe they fell for his new glasses.

(10,279 posts)has a plan to disperse the $13 M. "Glasses" Rick gives 12 speeches @ $1M per speech to Texas A&M students, cows, sheep, goats, alumni. No burden on "Glasses Rick", as it will be same speech recycled, and the audience will not realize that. The remaining $1M will go to the Rove family for writing the speech. The unpaid campaign workers? Screw the dumb jerks -- give them tickets to the speeches.

If he regarded the five million as a gift to Perry, the FEC ought to take an interest.

(101,306 posts)It's not like a charity with an officially registered purpose, and trustees who are legally held to have to follow that. They're not allowed to openly coordinate with candidates, and that's about it.
Current Super PACs: https://www.opensecrets.org/pacs/superpacs.php
'Right To Rise USA' for Jeb! has raised over $103 million; 'Keep the Promise I/II/III' and a few others for Cruz (split into 4 for some dubious purpose, I presume) over $38m; 'Unintimidated' for Walker over $20m; 'Conservative Solutions' for Rubio over $16m; 'Priorities USA Action' for Hillary over $15m; 'America Leads for Christie' over $11m; and 'Opportunity and Freedom' (again, I/II) nearly $13m. Other candidates are below $4m each.
Wait until Ted Cruz drops out. That's a huge amount of money a few people have to throw around. They can, presumably, say now "we're waiting for the general election" (all they've spent so far is about $170k), and then go "gosh darn it, he dropped out before we spent it!!!! Who'da thunk????" when he does inevitably fail. They can, if they choose, be loyal to Cruz and whoever he likes, buy campaigning for or against the people he would; or they could just say "we're buying ads on our favorite TV stations" and enrich some friends of theirs. Unless the Bush family have really lost their touch, I suspect they can trust the people in charge of their $103m to actually spend it to try and keep him in the race. Crossing the Bush family is still serious business, after all. Making off with the money of Cruz's supporters? Not so much of a problem.
