I was at the Lost Coast this summer and ran into two brilliant young English PHD's hiking that murderous, beautiful trail. They told me that England couldn't believe Donald Trump was running; to them, he is a Cruella deVille/Snidely Whiplash character who behaved so boorishly to a local elderly farmer that he was tossed out of the country on his rear.
They said that Trump engaged in all sorts of dirty tricks, including buying up all the land around the farmer's property and then filling it with toxic garbage, building a giant wall to block out his light, and other unsavory tactics. When some local attorneys took up the old farmer's case, Donald was handed his rear end and shown the door.

Baxter questions Trump about his "bullying" of Scottish locals, including the aforementioned 90-year-old and Michael Forbes, a farmer who refused to sell his land to Trump. The billionaire later called Forbes "an embarrassment to Scotland" who "lives like a pig."
Also in that article:
In addition to the sit-down with Trump, Baxter was also given access to Donald Trump, Jr., who describes himself as "environmentally conscious" but quickly pivots when asked about photographs of him holding the tail of a dead elephant and standing next to his brother, Eric, cradling the carcass of a leopard during a big game hunt in Africa.
Long live Scotland.

(111,222 posts)I doubt Forbes will prevail. Honestly, though, Trump's ignorance is absolutely staggering.
Forbes's place looks like most working farms I've seen.

(111,222 posts)and Trump is still fighting to force him to sell through "compulsory purchase," a Scots law roughly like our own eminent domain laws that are being perverted here in the service of Wal Mart and fancy developments in Florida. He's backed off temporarily, but we know he's a thug and a bully and isn't gone forever--or for long.
The truth is that he doesn't need the Forbes land, he's never needed it. He just doesn't want his richest guests on the top floor of his glitzy hotel to have to look at a working farm, which is what it looks like. It's no pigsty, it's no slum, it's a place that works for its keep.

In fact, the locals are laughing at the outrageous proposition that his golf course is going to be "world class" because none of his others are. In addition, there are some of the world's top courses within an easy drive of his overdone monstrosity.
That Scottish man could be one of my relatives.
I'm a Forbes and my family came from the Aberdeenshire area in the early 1700. The Forbes clan goes back a long way and many of us would gladly kick Trump in the ass. Or maybe that's just me. Yeah, just me. I would gladly kick Trump in the ass. Repeatedly.
Cool story and thanks for sharing.

(15,480 posts)The best travel adventure I ever had was a trip to Scotland - the Highlands and Edinburgh - and since then I've enjoyed following Scotland in the news.
The whole saga of Trump's aborted efforts in Scotland was quite entertaining. The man's ego was never on fuller display. Comments following news reports were biting. Ye cannae meddle w' the Scots, lad.

This was due to the Scottish Governments decision to give the green light to the £230 million European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre (EOWDC) in Aberdeen Bay, which will lie within sight of his championship links course.
Mr Trumps hopes of blocking the development through the Scottish courts were dealt a devastating blow yesterday when Lord Doherty, in a Court of Session judgment, rejected his petition for a judicial review of the governments decision to give the wind farm development the go-ahead.
Environment campaigners last night welcomed the decision, calling it great news for Scotland. Mary Church, head of campaigns at green group Friends of the Earth Scotland, said it was a victory for the environment against a billionaire bully. She said: Not only can this important wind farm go ahead and help pave the way to a low-carbon future for Scotland, but it will give some hope to the communities whose rights Trump has trampled on, that the government and courts can stand up to the billionaire bully.
Lang Banks, director of environmental group WWF Scotland, said: Its good to know despite all his bluster, the courts saw right through Trumps flimsy, misguided attempts to frustrate Scotlands ambition to create clean power and green jobs. We hope Mr Trump will now stop wasting any more time and money on this case.

(21,506 posts)Oddly enough the movie is about a town only 15 minutes from where Trump was building his golf course. Hopefully the ending with trump will be the same as in the movie but I doubt it.
Loved this movie.
