I thought that originally he wanted/expected to die after ruthlessly killing all those kind people.

I have no doubt that the god-fearing families of those who died, will want this plea deal accepted. Not only to save the trauma that a trial would bring, but also because they are caring souls, who would not want this man to be put to death.

Taxpayers get to support him in prison now for perhaps decades to come.

I like our approach in Iowa. No death penalty but very low likelihood of ever being released after a murder conviction. Just so long as the prison does not get too comfortable. Enough comfort to remain peaceful and humane but always a reminder that life would be better on the outside.
