It's no hoverboard, but....

New electric boards cause a buzz in Missoula

Tom Bauer

KB Brown, left, and Luke Rieker of Strongwater Mountain Surf Co. ride Onewheel boards on a trail in Missoula on Tuesday. The battery-powered boards are controlled by the rider’s balance and feet, can travel up to 15 miles per hour over gravel or pavement and are poised to be the next big thing in alternative personal transportation.

It’s possible that the future of alternative personal transportation has been rolling around the streets and trails of Missoula for the past few weeks. ... At least that’s what KB Brown and Luke Rieker of Strongwater Mountain Surf Co. believe.

It’s called a Onewheel – a battery-powered board that rolls on a durable go-kart wheel. A 500-watt motor inside is controlled by sensors that detect the rider’s forward or backward lean and adjust the speed accordingly. Lean forward to speed up to 15 miles per hour, or stand still to cruise at the pace of a friend on foot.
....

The boards were invented by an engineer in California in 2013, and a Kickstarter campaign in 2014 raised $630,000 so the parent company, Future Motion Inc., could roll out an initial line. Strongwater was one of the first 10 retailers in the world chosen to sell the boards.
....

Since the first shipment came in and the Strongwater owners and their friends started riding the boards around town, they’ve been amazed at the response – people often stop and stare when they see the guys out on the Kim Williams Trail or the Rattlesnake, for example. (Motorized travel on such trails, however, is not allowed.)

“It’s the future,” Brown said. “It’s crazy. They’re pretty amazing.”

“It’s already blown up,” Rieker added.

Do they mean "no gasoline motors allowed?"

Bad writing/editing, maybe?

Interesting take on personal transport, anyway. More for the younger person, though.
