Georgetown church starts petition to remove Confederate monument (TX)

GEORGETOWN — A Georgetown church has started a petition asking the county commissioners to remove a Confederate monument standing at the south entrance of the Williamson County Courthouse in Georgetown.

“It symbolizes an era harkening back to the Confederacy, which stood for slavery and white supremacy, and that’s the wrong message for today,” said Lou Snead, a member of the San Gabriel Unitarian Universalist Church in Georgetown ...

The church’s hope is that the city and county will move the statue to another place in Georgetown, such as the International Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery or the Williamson Museum ...

The 21-foot monument .... was erected in 1916 by the United Daughters of the Confederacy ...
