Carly Fiorina is wrong about the Planned Parenthood tapes. I know because I watched them.
Updated by Sarah Kliff
Carly Fiorina gave a harrowing description of the Planned Parenthood sting videos at Wednesday's Republican debate. She challenged Barack Obama to watch "a fully formed fetus on the table, its heart beating, its legs kicking, while someone says we have to keep it alive to harvest its brain."
Fiorina is wrong: Nobody watching the Planned Parenthood tapes would see those things. I know, because I recently watched all 12 hours of footage.
The videos were produced by the Center for Medical Progress, an anti-abortion group that argues Planned Parenthood has profited from procuring fetal tissue for researchers. The videos do show Planned Parenthood officials discussing fetal tissue, sometimes in ways that are callous and jarring. But there is no moment where Planned Parenthood discusses procuring fetal tissue for profit, nor is there the scene that Fiorina describes.
There are two Planned Parenthood sting videos that were shot inside Planned Parenthood clinics (other videos exist, taped at conferences and lunch meetings). One was taped in Louisiana and the other in Colorado. And in both videos, Planned Parenthood employees do work with the fetal tissue, showing the pro-life advocates posing as tissue buyers the different parts of the body.
But the things Fiorina describes the legs kicking, the intact "fully formed fetus," the heart beating, the remarks about having to "harvest its brain" are pure fiction.

(3,544 posts)How many watched last night? And 99% believe the GOP told the truth. Lie, or not lie, the damage is now done. It wasn't good that they weren't called out on anything. Hopefully by the end of the day, people will know the truth.

(12,253 posts)started talking about the tapes (all bulls***) and came back when Carly was finishing her fantasy scenario on organ harvesting. I can't believe they weren't called out, but I had to leave the room again. What a stupid "debate."

Fiorina was referring to a video released by the anti-abortion group The Center for Medical Progress last month, in which a former worker for StemExpress, a biomedical research company, said she saw a fully formed fetus's heart beating.
"This is the most gestated fetus and closest thing to a baby I've ever seen," Holly O'Donnell, a former procurement technician for StemExpress, said in the video. "I'm sitting here looking at this fetus and its heart is beating and I don't know what to do."
The clip does show what appears to be a fully formed fetus on an operating table with its legs twitching. But the clip Fiorina references is not part of the CMP sting video but was instead taken by another anti-abortion group and was added to the sting video. The Center for Medical Progress, however, doesn't explain where the fetus video was shot, so it's not clear whether it was taken at a Planned Parenthood clinic. For its part, the women's health organization has flatly denied the accusations.

(8,200 posts)This was not the only bare face lie that they were able to spew without any challenge. These gutless assholes that were chosen to pose the questions seem to me to be just another pack of worthless talking heads that are just cooperate stooges. They are just the same as the so-called journalists that repeated the Bush administration lies that led us into a horrific war that has had devastating consequences. They are allowed to repeat again and again the distortions such as totally ignoring the fact that Bush set the date for the removal of our forces in Iraq and the fact that when Obama attempted to negotiate the Iraqis insisted on their right to try American soldiers in their courts. They are nothing more than a pack of liars that the American press abets in duping their ignorant constituency.

(15,237 posts)It was not in any way a debate but a media driven spectacle of degradation, loathing, humiliation, and division. The role of CNN was to encourage a fight just short of physical violence.

(2,586 posts)Its one of the reasons why every question started off with, "X Republican Candidate called you a loser. How do you respond?" When they didn't answer the way they wanted they moved to another candidate and asked them the same question.
In other words a dog and pony show.
