Hes racing royalty. Literally. And to Beverly Hills residents, obnoxiously. The owner of a yellow Ferrari valued in the seven-figures captured on video speeding through stop signs and blazing past pedestrians in the wealthy city is Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad al Thani of Qatars ruling family.
... Over the weekend, the twenty-something was just a guy driving a very fancy car very fast, police said. Al Thani denied to officers who investigated the incident that anyone was driving recklessly. He also said he had diplomatic immunity, Beverly Hills police said.
After discussing the matter with the U.S. State Department and the Qatar consulate, authorities concluded the sheikh did not have such immunity, police Chief Dominick Rivetti said during a news conference Thursday.
... Al Thani has fled the country, police said. The Ferrari and white Porsche seen in the video also are gone.

(1,232 posts)taxed? Besides, if he's there on holiday then he's paying the sales tax on everything he buys!
No offense intended....
He's gone, problem solved. He's probably one of those stupid rich people that travels from holiday destination to destination just living the good life and partying all the time.

(75,480 posts)And he isn't just one. There are a whole bunch of non-American billionaires and their families who have been inhabiting California rich places, as well in other states, who are using our commons, water, electricity, etc., etc., and not paying for the privilege of doing it.
Paying Sales Tax???. I just have to horse laugh at that one right now.

(1,232 posts)resident visa.
If they have a business visa, they have to prove annually that they're operating a profitable venture with tax declarations and proper accounting. They must pay all the taxes in order to maintain the business visa. Getting US residency or a green card can take up to 15 years, rarely less than 8.
If they're renting a house, they are paying their utility bills such as water, gas and electric. If they own the house, they're paying local taxes assessed on the property in addition to all the utilities. They most certainly are 'paying for the privilege' of using public roads, utilities, etc. What makes you think that they get anything for free? If they're rich, they're shopping, buying gas, hiring local staff, local gardeners, housekeepers, chauffers, chefs, car washers, mechanics, repair people, and all the vendors required to look after a luxury estate. If they're rich they're eating out, paying their hi-falutin' bar tabs, buying fancy clothes and jewelry on Rodeo Drive and paying 8% sales tax while they're doing it! And on top of that, if they are living a nice life, they're employing a LOT of people to maintain that lifestyle, further boosting the local trades and economy. Having rich people around isn't a bad thing!
I'm not sure why you think rich people from other countries don't have to pay for anything. In just sales tax alone, for every 100K they're spending on goods and services, they're paying 8000 bucks in sales tax alone. For rich morons like this guy, 100K is what he spends a day just to play with his little race cars.

(75,480 posts)Really, we are not making the rich foreigners from all countries, not just the Middle East, or even American out of staters pay for the privilege of owning property here and using our commons, our water, our electricity and anything else that puts their footprint on our state. How many homes does John McCain have here on the beach in California? How about Oprah, who has a huge estate just a hundred miles down the coast from where I live and so many others. We need them to pay their share in taxes and they need to be punished for breaking the law just like we punish our poor people here.

(16,423 posts)1. Just because you say you have diplomatic immunity, that doesn't prove that you have diplomatic immunity. I guess, there is a document you are supposed to show to the authorities when claiming diplomatic immunity.
2. Oh, they couldn't identify the driver? Ask Thani if he was the speeding driver. If he denies, ask who borrowed his car. If he can't tell you who borrowed his car, note the car as stolen and impound it next time you see it.
But I guess, the cops were afraid of angering the 1%.
