Democrat Files Bill To Take Away Pay From All Congressmen Who Shut Down Government
by Colin Taylor September 18, 2015
As Congress gears up for yet another government shutdown battle, and Tea Party Republicans attempt to defund Planned Parenthood and take away reproductive healthcare from 630,000 Americans, one Congressman is fed up. Rep. Nick Nolan (D-MIN) has just introduced a bill, the No Government, No Pay Act of 2015, to prevent members of Congress from getting paid if they shut down the government again.
Nolan introduced a similar bill during the last shutdown, and donates his shutdown pay to charities in his district. His actions send a strong message to the rest of Congress. The constant re-fighting of political battles and the brinkmanship that the Republican-led Congress has established as business as usual is a huge embarrassment to our country and a dire indictment of our political system. Congresss 15% approval rating is evidence enough. There are huge issues facing our nation, but the right-wing insists on wasting our time on social issues that the majority of Americans arent concerned about. Its far beyond time our legislators began behaving like rational adults and actually sit down to govern.

(22,651 posts)I would presume you don't like the fact that Congress is rich just whom do you think would serve under that system?
Sunlei
(22,651 posts)you presume wrong, I don't mind 'rich' people at all.

(52,160 posts)is Sanders. Given his current net worth there is no way he could have afforded 20 years with no salary.

(22,651 posts)paid much attention to what he had to say over the past decades. I don't think he wanted to be elected for the paycheck or the cushie contacts for personal wealthbuilding
America would be a very different better place today if 'the people' & other elected, listened to Sanders years ago.

(52,160 posts)He has had a six figure salary for 20 years and has a net worth of a bit over 300k exclusive of his house or houses (I don't know if he bought in DC or rents in DC). That leads me to believe he actually needed a goodly portion of that salary to eat, put a roof over his head, pay his heating bill, etc. Under you system he would get no money at all to do those things. And he isn't the only example, he just is one in the news now.

(22,651 posts)Except normal base taxes everyone pays who has enough 'income' to file yearly with the IRS.

a Gulfstream V, and a yacht. Oh, don't forget the multiple houses I'll need the government to buy for me.
Your idea is not a good idea.

(31,464 posts)Hate to say it, but the grandstanding sobs should get heavily fined. A shutdown will only last a short time, then they'll get paid anyway. No BMW payments will be missed, no spawn kicked out of prep school for missing tuition, no dinners at The Four Seasons cancelled.
It's a nice, but totally symbolic, gesture.

(6,587 posts)anyway as it will still come from Medicaid. Their ignorance & hate is such they don't even see through all the good & the necessity of Planned Parenthood for those they serve.

(9,214 posts)All fines to be used to pay down the national debt. Over half a million per day, not bad, and don't forget weekends, many if not most people have to work weekends.
Punish the people that refuse to do their job and reduce national debt, win win, how could the Republicans be against that?
Hurt them in the pocketbook just like they seem to want to hurt us in the pocketbook.

(845 posts)It's unconstitutional. This is a show and a waste of time.
I don't disagree with the concept but it is pointless.

(22,000 posts)The sponsors would have to get quite a few Republicans on board in both the House and Senate and then get the leadership to allow a vote. The day Congress starts acting like rational adults, I'll run around city hall naked.
