(14,515 posts)"To measure intelligence, researchers carried out tests on recall, memory, verbal fluency, processing and reasoning. For example, participants were asked to recall a series of digits backwards and recite a list of words after a delay.
The researchers found higher IQ scores were significantly associated with lower scores on five of the six measures of religiosity - all except spirituality.
The strongest result was in the area of fundamental beliefs.
Intelligence was an "inoculation against fundamentalism", with each 15-point increase in IQ making people about half as likely to have strong fundamentalist views, said Bates.
"People who claim The Bible is the literal word of God are typically less likely to be intelligent," said fellow researcher Gary Lewis.
He and Bates agreed that those with higher IQs were more likely to challenge the claims made by religion.
The finding was a "fairly bold statement" to make, said University of Auckland Professor of theology, Elaine Wainwright." (Printed in NZ Herald)
So, the lower 'religiosity,' the higher the IQ, and at least a 15 point bump if not a fundy. So we might say that since the median IQ is 100, the fundamentalists are probably around 85, which is dull normal.

(63,221 posts)And it my experience, it usually is. Not in all cases, but a majority of the time. I think it has to do with the fact that people who are more intelligent just naturally question everything instead of taking things at face value.
But what does that have to say when you apply it to entire nations? Are Nordic/Northern European countries more intelligent on the whole than Middle Eastern/South-East Asian nations? I don't really know the answer, but it's just something to think about. Maybe it's because in very religious nations there is such a downside to being an unbeliever.

(2,061 posts)Indeed it was. Imagine the integrity and courage it took for an atheist to find out that an atheist tests higher in intelligence. They are to be congratulated.
The researchers found higher IQ scores were significantly associated with lower scores on five of the six measures of religiosity - all except spirituality.
This allows an atheist to say they aren't religious but they are 'spiritual' with the added benefit that they test higher on their test.
Confirmation bias?
Please tell me how you feel about the book, "The Bell Curve: Intelligence and Class Structure in American Life"?

(46,260 posts)But Freepers can be quite intelligent, sometimes.
I seen a few that are very bright.
Now are they also absolutely stupid? Yes.
See, that's the difference between ignorance and stupidity.
Ignorance, don't know any better.
Stupidity, knows better but still believes in bullshit.
