3. As a Volkswagen owner, though not a diesel

I guess this will kill them from ever bringing the Tiguan diesel over. :/

I figure I may trade in earlier than I wanted....there should be some good deals on a gas Golf on the horizon.

VW will reprogram/replace the computer and that is all that will happen. They already have compensated the dealers for 2016 cars they can't sell.

14. The compensation should go to the state, for environmental clearup

The owners have been getting the diesel mileage they expected; but they have, unknowingly, been polluting more. So everyone has been suffering, rather than the owners. Money should go towards health problems like asthma, or climate change problems.

Although, reading and thinking about it a little more, if the fix for this involves getting the real-world pollution below the proper limits, that may affect the fuel economy, which would then start costing the owners more, and affect the resale value. So in those terms, the owners would look eligible for some compensation.

9. Did the dirtier 'standard' fuel settings actually yield discernable performance improvements?

I have the feeling that almost nobody would notice the difference if they weren't racing these vehicles, but I may be wrong.

Second, if VW is able to develop a fix and get it approved, the performance and fuel efficiency of their cars might fall. That's more likely if the fix is only a software update, which would be far cheaper for Volkswagen.

If VW ends up having to make software changes and retrofit an entire SCR system to the cars (other than the Passat TDI)--something that would likely cost it thousands of dollars per car--performance would likely be unchanged, but interior volume might be reduced to accommodate a liquid-urea tank and associated plumbing.
