Is that something that he had been known as over the years?

July 22nd, 1972. I hope they can further make a tribute to #8, because he is a huge legend.

Part of the Yankee tradition is Old Timers' Day, held early in the season at the Stadium. Not only are the old-timers honored, the not-quite-as-old timers play a few innings. There is a backstory here: Yogi and the team had a disagreement some years ago, so for a while he had nothing to do with the team, including Old Timers' Day. Fortunately for all, they kissed and made up a few years ago.

Great and funny guy (not always intentionally, but always!). My dad used to take me to Yankees-Senators games at Griffith Stadium when I was a kid, and I saw Berra catching from afar a few times, but that was as close as I ever got.

14. One more misstatement from Yogi
Wed Sep 23, 2015, 11:33 PM
Sep 2015

One time, Yogi was given a check for payment which was endorsed "Pay to Bearer." He was a little upset about it because he said he hated it when people misspelled his name.

Yogi grew up in an Italian neighborhood in St. Louis known as "The Hill" and the odd thing about it was that another Major League catcher named Joe Garagiola, later a renowned broadcaster, grew up across the street from him. As Garagiola was considered a better major league prospect than Yogi, Yogi often said that he had a pretty good pro career for a kid who was the second best catcher on his block.

Yogi was one of my favorites. He was an excellent catcher, and could hit like nobody else. Several times I saw him get a hit off of a ball that bounced on the ground in front of the plate! He was also a very good manager and coach.
The world is a sadder place without his witicisms.

One of many, but my hero nonetheless.

Yogi epitomized the Oscar Wilde observation, "Always be yourself. Everybody else is already taken."

RIP, Mr. Berra. As a wise guy once said, "t ain't over til it's over."
