(12,655 posts)i am going to cut him a break. he is a lifelong catholic and this is the third pope in 20 years he has tried to get to do this. plus he tends to be a weeper. so he gets a one day pass from me no swipes. good for today only.

(51,129 posts)that we cannot judge the past by present standards. When exactly did they add "Thou shalt not kill" to the Ten Commandments, after the Little Big Horn? Yes we can judge the past by today's standards because we have the same standards now for thousands of years. And the Pope was the one who divided the world between the Christian kings and got a 20% cut on all the plunder.

(62,683 posts)Love one another, judge not, do unto others...
He, the Dali Lama, Desmond Tutu, I'm sure there are others, give off that same vibe, but Francis's reach and message seems to be reaching so many more.
Unfortunately, the centuries of doctrine color some of his beliefs, but he gets the important stuff.

(26,255 posts)I have immense respect for this Pope.
LynneSin
(95,337 posts)because unlike those anti-choice assholes he is speaking to, the Pope is truly Pro-life. I know this Pope also cares what happens to the fetus after it is born because he wants us to do better with helping the poor. I know this Pope is against war and against the Death Penalty. So I'm fine with his stance on choice.
I know I won't agree with good people on all the issues. But when someone is working this hard for helping those who are poor and against war - not going to stand in their way.
Siwsan
(26,255 posts)In a way he reminds me of the first Pope John Paul and how I imagine his papacy would have evolved. I have the utmost respect for Pope Francis.
Kelvin Mace
(17,469 posts)IF he emphasizes to these clowns that capital punishment is WRONG and that the criminal's life is just as sacred as the fetus. Short of that, he gets no pass from me.
UPDATE: And he appears to have done that, so I now officially give him a pass on the issue. (I know he will be relieved).
Seriously, I am very happy to hear him denounce the death penalty.

(51,129 posts)for a long time ahead. This is a pivotal Pope in Catholic politics, reclaiming the Catholics ensnared by American propaganda. Hate is evil, and too many good people have been led down that evil path of hating and fearing others instead of behaving like Christians.
