Some enterprising young DUer with access to the appropriate software
should compare this audio to audio of every female member of congress

(55,745 posts)It would indict more than the speaker expressing the sentiment.

(15,381 posts)A Michele Bachmann/Sarah Palin type. In fact, either one would be the type of person to say this, but it didn't sound like Michele, and if it were Sarah, it would be something like, "Oh, geeze, I'd really like to throw a shoe at the Pope, doncha know?"

(55,745 posts)A reporter sees Bush and throws a shoe, I can understand.
The guy attacked his country, killed his people, and destroyed his future.
Other than that, there's money to be made, dammit.

(45,319 posts)Characterizing an attack on minorities as a call for peace and justice is dishonest. But now I know where you stand.

(55,745 posts)I'll remember that from now on.

(45,319 posts)says LGBT are not your inferiors to be commanded. It is dishonest to claim that a speech that included anti choice and anti gay material was all about justice and peace. It is at the very least incomplete in a self serving way. It is an attempt to define 'justice' as something that excludes women and LGBT and it is not acceptable to me. So write whatever nonsense you wish, so will I.
But do not put words in my mouth. In no way did I suggest that you should not write what you want. That too was dishonest. Very much, a personal attack against me which was simply false, your own creation. It is what it is, when you got nothing you have to make shit up.

(37,364 posts)I heard the same speech points you did. While I agree with him on war for profit and immigratiom and the treatment of the poor, treaing women and LGBTQ people as inferior will not eliminate the systemic problems which perpetuate the violence and poverty which affect them in large numbers.

(55,745 posts)You have no idea what my "preacher" has told me. I'd thought you might have picked that up from what I've posted.
BTW: I didn't put any words in your mouth. I wouldn't want to go there.

(5,815 posts)Conservatives are nonplussed at the pope, yes, but he also criticized reproductive freedom and LGBT equality.

(45,319 posts)It's the narrative.

(5,815 posts)I absolutely love what he's saying about economic justice, climate change, etc. But he's a flawed man. Some of his flawed ideas are dangerous. Praise for the good, condemnation for the bad.
This narrative that it's suddenly Pope vs. Republicans irks. It's Pope vs. People Who Believe Differently. Which means liberals on some things, conservatives on others. At least, if we're being honest.

One of my first thoughts was of when my wife worked for Energy and Commerce under chairman Dingell:
She was attending a joint meeting for a speech by the President of South Korea
Of course she was in back and found herself sitting behind one, Newt Gingrich
She said that she wished she had a hatpin - she would have stuck it - right - in - his - ass.

(37,748 posts)"There is no freaking law against expressing a desire to throw a shoe at the Pope..."
However, there are many people who believe that our representatives should hold themselves to a higher standard of ethics, behavior and even civility, regardless of who is speaking or what is being spoken... regardless of how we rationalize civility as merely time and place appropriate.
Some possible suspects, part two. A simple-minded, half-witted jack-ass lacking manners.
