Fed Up With Vitter and Jindal, Louisiana Voters Might Elect Democratic Governor

A Public Policy Polling (PPP) survey released on September 23rd shows that Democrat John Bel Edwards could capitalize on voter dissatisfaction with Republicans to become Louisianas next Governor. John Bel Edwards and current Republican Senator David Vitter are projected to advance from an October 24th runoff election to face each other on November 21st.
In the multi-candidate race, John Bel Edwards is supported by 28 percent of voters to 27 percent who favor Vitter. Republicans Scott Angelle and Jay Dardenne poll 15 and 14 percent respectively. In Louisianas jungle primary, candidates from all parties run against each other simultaneously, and if no candidate secures a majority of the vote, a runoff election is held.
The good news for Democrats is that if John Bel Edwards and David Vitter face each other in a general election, Edwards would stand a strong chance of winning, despite Louisianas usually conservative tilt. Senator Vitter has become remarkably unpopular with his constituents, sporting an under water 34/51 unfavorable to favorable rating.
In a head to head contest, Louisiana voters prefer Edwards by a 50 to 38 margin. That represents a massive 30-point shift away from Vitter, who held a 50 to 32 lead over Edwards a year ago. Senator Vitters extreme right-wing agenda on issues important to women has cost him dearly with female voters. Women favor Edwards by a massive 57 to 30 percent margin.

(82,849 posts)Who knew? It hasn't looked that way from the results in Kansas, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Michigan, Wisconsin, Arizona or Texas. The more they beat on people, the more popular the GOP seems to become. Maybe Louisiana will prove to be where the camel's back had finally had enough.

(1,325 posts)I get the whole transgender thing. No problem here. Transgenerational is another kettle of fish. Lots of kids love to dress up like old people, but not too many adults; especially proud church-going family values types are drawn to wearing diapers and playing baby. Even more so, when in the company of a sex worker paid for their attendance at such events.

The scandal-tainted senator has long been considered the gubernatorial frontrunner. Now, all bets are off

(3,812 posts)Even though he's on the left side of the political spectrum in Louisiana. Be that as it may, I'd say his chances are a longshot. Louisiana has a free for all primary in which all candidates, regardless of party, run. He's running against several republicans, so he could well make the runoff if Democrats turn out on election day. However, the runoff will be head to head against a Republican, most likely Vitter, and even with Vitter's baggage, that will be a big hill for Edwards to climb. Louisiana is a very conservative state these days.

(1,732 posts)but solid blue when it comes to economics and fighting for the working class. He's a great guy personally, and very principled ... I would disagree that he's a long shot. IMO, he has a great chance to win in a state that has grown extremely tired of Bobby Jindal and anyone with views remotely close to him. David Vitter has tried to distance himself (from Jindal) but JBE has done a great job running against a Jindal "third term." Higher education has a taken a major hit over the last eight years and I think most have come to the realization that the only way to save it is to vote for a Democrat. JBE has a military background and conservative enough on social issues that older voters who used to vote Dem in the 70s, 80s and even into the 90s, are willing to take another chance. If he can get his message out over the next few weeks, I think he can pull it off.

(3,396 posts)a storm has been brewing against Vitter with non-stop ads reminding voters of his broken moral compass, his absence of meaningful legislation while in Congress, and an electorate just waking up to the Jindal state giveaway.
Vitter's strong suit is the $4 million war-chest he's sitting on which is more than the rest put together and high name recognition. His biggest weakness is his high name recognition and it's high negatives.

(3,812 posts)Fortunately for Vitter, Jindal is off gallavanting around the country these days. If he took and interest in the election for his successor, he could make things very interesting.

I remember when Louisiana's strange Primary system had John Edwards running against David Duke (of kkk fame).
Bumper stickers and billboards appeared across the state:

Louisiana is one of the most unique (strangest) states in America.
You could live there for 20 years, and STILL be baffled.

(3,396 posts)are thinking of, the election was in 1991, and yes he is out of prison. Edwards beat Duke by approximately 61% to 39%.

(18,470 posts)My uncle moved there in the late 60s, got married, and lives there with his family.
My mom moved down there for a couple years in the early 70s and my uncle thought if she had stayed a bit longer she might have decided to stay down there permanently. Of course if that had happened I wouldn't be here now.
I had a friend who loved New Orleans - he worked down there part of the time while living up here in Iowa. He was going to move down there with his girlfriend full time but he died right before he could make that happen.

C'mon. Bring a progressive means avoiding Republican talking points like all Democrats in Louisiana are corrupt. You've had a Republican justice system that for twenty years has harassed and demonized Democrats in Louisiana, and given a free pass to Vitter, Scalise, Livingston, and a host of other Louisiana Republicans.
Thanks for drinking the Cool Aid. It's tough being a Democrat in Louisiana when those in your own party are shouting the Republican talking points.
