I bookmarked it. I usually have a good idea about celestial events but it's always good to have another tool for precision. Sp far it looks like I might get to see this one, often it's overcast during the cool stuff like meteor showers, like most of them, so I'm thrilled that this one may not be obscured!

Thanks.

So I won't be able to see it.

But I have witnessed two lunar eclipses before--
One in Arkansas, in 1986.
One in Japan, in 1999.

I remember the one in 1986. However, I wouldn't have known the date without your post. I was in Chicago at the time.

Arkansas to Japan. Now that has to be culture shock.

I'm sure you'll see something spectacular in the sky we won't see, very soon. Did you see the solar eclipse a few months ago?

Sep 2015

was back in July 2009 I think, when there was a total eclipse between the island of Kyushu and Okinawa. Unfortunately, I was nowhere near there, and where I was it was sort of dark due to cloudiness anyway, so I missed that chance to actually experience a solar eclipse.

I was busy with late night research, and while I was returning home, by bicycle, I happened to look at the moon and noticed there was something "odd" about it. So I stared at it until I realized it was a lunar eclipse, then I kept watching it until it was over.

I knew in advance that the 1999 eclipse was going to happen, because I had some software that predicted it, so I waited outside for it to start up, and since the sky was clear that night, I got to see the eclipse in its full glory. It was as amazing as the 1986 eclipse.

I still rank that serendipitous 1986 eclipse as one of my most amazing celestial experiences, along with the 1999 eclipse, and an event that happened in maybe 1987 when some Soviet space junk entered the atmosphere. I was in a late night caravan headed for the Buffalo River for a float trip, when we all stopped in the middle of nowhere to watch a mighty glow that appeared in the sky. It was a spectacular sight, to say the least. It wasn't until a couple of days later that we heard it was some Soviet space junk that was burning up upon reentry into the atmosphere.

The most disappointing celestial experience I've had was in 1986, when Halley's Comet was supposed to be visible in the night sky. Even though I headed for the darkest place I knew of (a rural area called Hogeye), I still couldn't see it.

69. I saw two other events
Sun Sep 27, 2015, 10:47 AM
Sep 2015

In the sky that I'll never forget, besides the '86 lunar eclipse.

A meteor shower while vacationing in Jackson Hole, WY. Was absolutely spectacular and went on for hours.

A solar eclipse when I was a little kid in Chicago. I don't remember the date or if it was a full eclipse. We watched it on a board we put on the ground while holding a piece of cardboard with a hole in it for the sun to shine through.

Oh, then some other thing that we assumed was a UFO. It was a ufo to us but I'm sure it was known to anyone with knowledge of the skies,

Sorry you missed Halley's Comet. I saw that one two. But you've caught some cool stuff!
