That speaks volumes about them. Ketchup is a vegetable in school lunch. Iran-Contra. Trickle down economics. He had too many stupid statements for me to list but I remember him joking about bombing Russia. I was in college at the time and I thought he was disgrace to this country.

(14,449 posts)There is no way he wins the nomination today. I actually think they'd hate him.
He was an out of touch dinosaur when he was elected.

(50,447 posts)He closed the loopholes in an attempt to fix the disaster his Kemp-Roth rate cuts created the year before. Instead of doing what an honest man would do - admit he fucked up and repeal Kemp-Roth - he closed some loopholes that really should have stayed open, like the non-mortgage interest deduction and the commercial-realty loss (aka "passive income loss" deduction. Killing the passive loss deduction was the straw that broke 747 camels' backs in one throw, that being the number of S&Ls that collapsed during Reagan's reign of terror.
Who else do they have? Nixon? Eisenhoweris way too liberal for them, they never say his name.
Bush the 1st? He sinned when he raised taxes (so did Reagan but he was 'charming'.)
I don' know how people vote GOP. They don't like to govern, all they do is wreck havoc for the next democratic President to clean up.

(118,032 posts)Reagan had a gauzy optimistic view and folksy mannerisms
That was fine with the people who pushed him into office, because what they wanted was an empty suit, whose real role was to deflect attention from what happened behind the scenes
And lots of ordinary folk adored him -- as long as they had no clue what was really happening
The same crowd pushed W into office twenty years later, with a similar "you could drink a beer with him" message, and the same intent to have empty suit, who could deflect attention from what was happening behind the scenes
The current crop of brainless Republican candidates shows that the same handler-culture still wants an empty suit
