One camper, Melanie Wotherspoon, described the experience in a Facebook post. Yep, cant believe we made it out, she wrote. I thought we were goners for sure, was truly scary how fast it came into our campsite and swallowed it up.
A woman ran through nearby campsites, screaming at people to wake up and get out, the ABC reports.
Police and SES crews raced to the site, where no one was reported injured or missing. Up to 140 people were evacuated.

(54,302 posts)Less than a month ago, I was outside Skagway, Alaska, and the naturalist who was our guide thought he spotted something in the distance, so he set up a portable telescope.
Below a bridge, a mama grizzly bear and her two cubs came out of the woods to look for salmon in the small river. Two men in cars near or on the bridge got out of their cars and started approaching the bears to take photos. The naturalist freaked out, seeing as how female grizzly bears are extremely protective of their young and will not hesitate to attack anything they perceive as a threat.
We were too far away to shout, and he told us that either 1.) the mama bear had been around humans before and didn't consider them a threat or 2.) we were all about to witness the brutal death of a stupid tourist or two.
Mama bear, fortunately for the idiot in the distance, had been near humans before, and did nothing more sinister than keep a close eye on him. As there was no way the tourist could have known this, he was still an idiot--just a lucky one.
