Whole Foods is cutting 1,500 jobs

http://fortune.com/2015/09/28/whole-foods-jobs/

The layoffs will affect 1.6% of the grocery store chain’s workforce.

Whole Foods Market said Monday it will cut roughly 1,500 jobs, or about 1.6% of its workforce, over the next two months.

In a statement, the upscale grocery store chain described the layoffs as being “part of its ongoing commitment to lower prices for its customers and invest in technology upgrades while improving its cost structure.” Many of the cuts will likely take place through “natural attrition,” the company said, adding that some of those laid off workers could eventually find new jobs within the company, which has 2,000 open positions and more than 100 new stores in some stage of development.

“This is a very difficult decision, and we are committed to treating affected Team Members in a caring and respectful manner,” Whole Foods ( WFM -0.77% ) co-CEO Walter Robb said in a statement. “We have offered them several options including transition pay, a generous severance, or the opportunity to apply for other jobs. In addition, we will pay these Team Members in full over the next eight weeks as they decide which option to choose. We believe this is an important step to evolve Whole Foods Market in a rapidly changing marketplace.”

on a personal note: this directly effects me. some of you may or may not know that Mrs. Javaman works for WFs. she has worked there for several years (because of the employee discount, it's the only way we can afford to shop there). We are holding our breath to see what happens. If she loses her job, our lives will change dramatically.

That being said, we both have major issues with how WFs is run, but given our financial situation, now and in the past, Mrs. Javaman had to keep her head down and grin and bear it.

So, even if you don't like WFs, which is totally cool and I completely understand why, please at least send us some good vibes in hopes that she keeps her job.

cheers.

Though in my case I consider it a blessing in disguise the corporate bastards laid me off as I was nearing a nervous
breakdown performing the work of three people easily in a high stress media position.

Mrs. Javaman has been working there since the time they weren't a corporate nightmare.

and as each and every year goes by, as she says it, "I lose a little piece of myself".

but when you are our age, beggar's can't be choosers.

we both believe that mackey and his board of ex-walmart execs are all complete assholes.

more over, mackey's convenient libertarian screed is only good for the rich, for his employees, to him, they can all go fuck off.

Mrs. Javaman is just a few short years from retirement. Believe me, she won't look back.

we need to just hang on for a few more years.

but honestly, since we are in "right to fire" texas, we have no idea what's going to happen.

the company is built upon greed. plain and simple.

John Mackey called Obamacare both "socialism" and "fascism" as noted here....

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/01/16/whole-foods-ceo-obamacare-fascism_n_2488029.html

And here Mackey stands with Walter Robb, trying to explain how their company was overcharging customers and "apologizing" for it.

Whole Foods Founder John Mackey, CEO Walter Robb Apologize for Overcharging

The CEOs of Whole Foods are apologizing for overcharging customers and offering free food to people in return.

"Straight up, we made some mistakes. We want to own that and tell you what we’re doing about it,” Walter Robb, co-CEO of Whole Foods Market said in a video published on Wednesday.

Investigators found Whole Foods locations in New York City "routinely overstated" the weight of pre-packaged contents and overcharged customers, according to an announcement by the city's Department of Consumer Affairs last week. The investigation also found the company undercharged customers.

Whole Foods is a bit a bit overpriced but they have a beautiful store in my area. They transformed an old supermarket into a glass fronted beautiful building.

WF has been riding the gravy train of "organic lifestyle" for years, but other competitors have followed suit with cheaper (and sometimes better) options. Not to mention those competitors don't fuck over shoppers with inflated prices, so really WF brought it upon themselves. Sad to see thousands of people have to pay because of the greed of CEOs. Again I hope your wife keeps her job and others can be spared as well.

to look at it from the positive side. That's pretty good odds. I'm sure they
have certain stores targeted.

I'm not a WF foodie, myself, even though we have one here. There sure is a lot of competition,
though, among grocery stores locally.

At the local WF where my daughter works, it was mainly supervisors who were cut, not team members. But the way they did it was awful and bumbling and simply not wise, so much so that other people quit in protest.

What a miserable working environment. I feel really bad for them. The people at WF tend to be wonderful, imho. As usual, it's the ones at the top being reactionary and stupid, and destroying lives in the process.

I relocated after a divorce at age 60. I'm 67 now. I got several jobs, all entry level, understandably. A couple of months ago I actually turned down a job because it was part time, but 30 hours a week, and I didn't want to work that many hours. They've already called me in to do a temp stint there, and will call me again.

Four years can be awful if she's unhappy.

I think we got a week of severance pay for every thousand hours we had worked. There was an upper limit, but it was pretty generous. We also got paid for all our accumulated PTO. They gave us 2 months notice and if we wanted to quit early, we still got the severance pay.

No one wants to get laid off, but I've been at companies where they marched people out with security guards.
