Is shaving as we know it soon to be obsolete?:
The Skarp Laser Razor is supposed to use a laser to give a close shave with less irritation. And, since its blade lasts a long time, fewer razors would end up in landfills.

Shaving can be the absolute worst, especially for people with sensitive skin. Razors can leave behind razor burn, ingrown hairs and cuts, and when you've worn down a razor so that it's no longer usable, it joins the others in landfills to the tune of 2 billion razors per year in the US (PDF).
The makers of a new product called the Skarp Laser Razor want to give you an incredibly close, irritation-free shave using lasers. The prototype is an aluminum razor-shaped gizmo that they say uses a laser to cut (not burn) the hair at skin level for a close shave, and works for all hair colors.
Because the laser is supposed to last about 50,000 hours and be usable without water, it would be good for the environment as well...

(21 posts)This thing looks like it will last a long long time (provided you can replace the batteries) meaning $150 isn't that bad. Like a straight razor once you buy one you can generally use it for years without having to put a cent into it making it cheaper in the long run, and considering a straight razor can easily go for north of $150 for a quality one i'm confident that the price won't be that intimidating.

I used to have a ponytail, up until the hair on my head got so sparse there was little left to band or braid.

(34,845 posts)You do this by drying them as gently as possible and keeping them dry in between uses. It's the water that speeds the deterioration process of the metal. Google it if you don't believe me.
I dry my blade then stand it on edge in the medicine cabinet so it will dry further. I haven't gotten any to last a year but I'm satisfied with 2 months per blade.
Money saved.

(10,269 posts)vegetable oil will work fine( but will go rancid after about a week), but there's also standard shaving oil (that you're supposed to use in place of shaving cream) that probably works much better.
Just drop the razor blade-down in a cup when you're finished, and walla...All the water comes to the surface and the blade edge won't tarnish or rust out.
Be ready tho, as cleaning the cup out later will be a pain..
But yeah it works. I kept one cheap disposable razor sharp for almost 6 months, and I need to shave at least twice a week.

(21 posts)Find a cheap used one, get it sharpened, and then you never have to buy another blade in your life. Plus it makes you look cool as anything

(8,614 posts)Including two made of Damascus Steel. Been shaving with them since I was 20 years old. That makes it over fourty years. Cut close and smooth enough for the DI's.
Don't see any need to change.
