Trump: I'm worth 10 billion dollars! Forbes & Bloomberg: No, you are not. Not by far.

http://www.salon.com/2015/09/29/donald_trump_just_got_busted_for_exaggerating_his_net_worth_by_more_than_100_percent_and_hes_not_happy_about_it/

After running an investigation for more than one year, Forbes has come to an estimate that Donald Trump is worth about $4.5 billion.

Bloomberg published a report in July that put him at $3 billion.

Donald Trump claims that his net worth is $10 billion and he reaches this number by counting the value of his brand separately. Forbes on the other hand has a policy to count brand-value differently: They figure that the brand inflates the earnings from dealings and is therefore already part of the earnings.

“Of course your numbers are wrong … I’m worth much more than you have me down for,” Trump insisted during an extended two hour interview with Forbes.

“I’m running for president … I don’t look good, to be honest. I mean, I look better if I’m worth $10 billion than if I’m worth $4 billion,” he admitted before eventually lashing out against the publication in typical Trump fashion.

Trump said that another “respected magazine that’s coming out” estimated his fortune at closer to $11.5 billion.

“You’re gonna look bad,” Trump warned Forbes. “And look, all I can say is Forbes is a bankrupt magazine, doesn’t know what they’re talking about. That’s all I’m gonna say. ‘Cause it’s embarrassing to me.”

-----------------------------------------------

I have read somewhere that the real-estate his father left him would be worth about $10 billion today. And a commenter of the salon-article above claimed that Trump would be worth $14,000,000,000 if he had put his inheritance in the bank in 1982.

Trump inflating his value is not necessarily an intentional lie: It is a well-documented psychological issue that people prefer to present profit that is a round number (e.g. $10 billion) or slightly above a round number (e.g. $11.5 billion). A profit slightly below a round number makes you look like a failure.

There was a great article here on DU a few weeks ago. Several golf industry valuation experts were cited by name.

...in overseas numbered bank accounts and shell corporations.

Or as dirty favors he could collect on with a phone call. Maybe that's his "brand."

You never know with these guys. Billionaires are a twisted lot.

11. This is Trump's fatal flaw. No accomplishment is good enough.

Having $3-4 billion is insanely rich, yet he has to insist he's worth $10 billion.

"The Art of the Deal" being a bestseller isn't good enough; it has to be "the greatest selling business book of all time" (it wasn't.)

It's like he can't deal with even the slightest, most remote sliver of modesty.
