Glad to be an atheist.

(12,153 posts)On Wednesday, the Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, confirmed the meeting, but he declined to elaborate. I do not deny that the meeting took place, but I have no other comments to add, he said.
The author of the article wrote that Lombardi confirmed the meeting. Lombardi said only, "I do not deny that the meeting took place..."
I take it that the Vatican, probably including the pope, are on Davis's side in the matter and don't want to expose her as a liar (or themselves as liars) so they won't say one way or the other whether she met with the pope.

(82,333 posts)He did not refer specifically to Davis in his reply, saying: "I can't have in mind all the cases that can exist about conscientious objection but yes, I can say that conscientious objection is a right that is a part of every human right. It is a right. And if a person does not allow others to be a conscientious objector, he denies a right."

(43,166 posts)He made a very vague, generic non-statement concerning "conscientious objection" without addressing Davis' actual act of prohibiting others in her office from issuing marriage licenses (which is the only real issue of substance in the entire Davis debacle.)
As I mentioned elsewhere, getting the Pope to meet with you doesn't necessarily mean he's going to endorse everything and anything you do. It just means the Pope's going to meet with you.
Non-issue supreme.
