(5,461 posts)Otherwise, that would be denying her rights as a Christian! If she were to resign, she would not be able to exercise this right.

(11,804 posts)She's free to object to this policy all she wants; she's free to protest. We might find it unseemly and wrong but that's her right.
But when she chooses to break the law in order to protest, than she should be held accountable. People who objected to the Vietnam war went to jail or fled the country. People who objected to laws enforcing Jim Crow were arrested or worse (much worse). Kim Davis want's her to have her cake and eat it too.
While I agree with the Pope on economic issues; this response is pretty disappointing.

Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance.
Pope "I can't have in mind all the cases that can exist about conscientious objection
but yes, I can say that conscientious objection is a right that is a part of every human right. It is a right. And if a person does not allow others to be a conscientious objector, he denies a right."
Essentially Kim Davis was allowed her objection. The judge would allow her to not personally witness these licences so long she allow her clerks to do so. But she refused. Since she holds a state position she is denying other people's rights. No one has forced Davis to be an elected official, she choose that. No one has even forced her to do her job, just as long as her office does her job for her. Instead she won't be happy unless she denies other a fundamental right granted by the constitution according to the Supreme Court. No one is denying her freedom of thought, conscience or religion. She on the other hand is single handed dictating her religion on others. She is thus by the Pope's own or the UN's definition NOT a conscientious objector. She is an oppressor, the very thing the concept of conscientious objector originally formed to counter act. Manifestation of religious beliefs that oppress people by use of state power have never met the definition of conscientious objector nor should it.

(7,570 posts)Oh, how I wish she would do that. She would REALLY win people over to her cause. But no, she's perfectly content to just sit around on her lazy ass doing jack shit at the expense of the taxpayers in her district.

(6,283 posts)If she's really committed to her principles, she should be ready to lead the life they provide - in her case a life without being a County Clerk and all it entails.
As it her, she isn't a conscientious objector - she's a conscious obstructionist, placing her religious beliefs in front of the law because it fits her tiny little world.
Get her out of that job please. Her 15 minutes has to be up soon, no ?

She makes damned good money (and bennies) there for a clerical position. She will never willingly give it up.
I agree that being committed to her principles means giving up her job, and the county should require it. I wonder how strong her principles will be if that happens.

(6,283 posts)...is if some big Rethug operation offers her mega bucks (comparatively speaking) to be their front.
What a f'ing loser, in a loser county of people who elected her. Not sure when her term comes up for election (read 2018 but I don't really trust that site) but that'll be fun if she decides to run. I'll bet she could get re-elected down there. 12k registered voters, ~50% turnout for the 2012 presidential election...county went about 60/40 for Mitt. She won the job with less than 4k votes. Seems to me she could win again. That, above all, would be the travesty.

Here is the oath of office taken by court clerks and deputies in Kentucky:
___
Oath of clerk and deputies:
Every clerk and deputy, in addition to the oath prescribed by Section 228 of the Constitution, shall, before entering on the duties of his office, take the following oath in presence of the Circuit Court:
I, _____, do swear that I will well and truly discharge the duties of the office of _____ County Circuit Court clerk, according to the best of my skill and judgment, making the due entries and records of all orders, judgments, decrees, opinions and proceedings of the court, and carefully filing and preserving in my office all books and papers which come to my possession by virtue of my office; and that I will not knowingly or willingly commit any malfeasance of office, and will faithfully execute the duties of my office without favor, affection or partiality, so help me God.

(12,151 posts)Constitution conflicts with her views.
What she can't do is take that oath and hold that office, and attempt to force her religion onto people through it.
Very well said.
