The world would be better off without popes, mullahs, kings, queens, and sheikhs but fuck it, this is the world we live in.

The idea that having agreement on 'some things' with unsavory political figures requires some sort of devotion to them is crazy talk. It is also a principle none on DU have ever practiced toward any other political figure in the past. Double standards suck.

I suppose it's a matter of context. In the context of a progressive political community, this Pope can still seem like a reactionary and a bit of a throwback. In the (historical) context of the Roman Catholic Church, he's a radical reformer.

Is he everything I'd want him to be? Nope. Is he unexpectedly progressive in many (if decidedly not all) areas? Absolutely. I'll take what I can get, Pope-wise. "Perfect is the enemy of good."

Disclaimer: I have no dog in the fight. Not only am I not Catholic, I'm not Christian (or religious at all).

It lauds misogyny and homophobia. It has brought untold misery to women and the planet for centuries. It has literally raped and pillaged the world. It has enslaved females. It is secretive and oppressive. It is based on idiotic primitive mythologies intended to make humans compliant with church poohbahs and dampen any shred of reason. It sickens me that "progressives" still support the RCC, aka Grifters R Us.

Yes, this Pope is better than the last one, but that's not saying much.

He's not anyone's trained monkey. He's not there to say whatever one particular political ideology wants him to say so they can claim him as their own. American liberals and American conservatives both need to realize this.

He's not a member of any specific American political party nor is he even American. He's the leader of an international religious organization.

He's going to say what he says and do what he does, and we'll be free to both agree and disagree with whatever we so choose based on our own personal set of beliefs.

Why is this so hard for people to understand?

I hate that the RCC pushes its dogma on society the way that they do. I hate that he called people I love child abusers because they are raising children.

That's not the same as hating the Pope.

Interesting poll. I have read through a number of OP/threads on the Pope over the last week, and have found a good 10% worth thinking about. I think that your poll falls into that group, and appreciate that you have posted it.

As happens, my thoughts about this fellow do not fit squarely in any of the choices -- which isn't to suggest the poll is in error. I may compose an essay regarding my thoughts, both positive and negative, on him.

Thanks.
