... Theres nothing like coal rollers, a group that brings new meaning to the term dirty diesel. My first encounter came during a trip through Tennessee in a Toyota Prius. Driving a Prius in coal-roller country is like painting a bulls-eye on your forehead, since coal rollers refer to diesel exhaust as Prius repellent.
While stopped at a traffic light, I found myself behind the kind of pickup truck you tend to see mostly in small towns that have a high concentration of guns and a shallow gene pool: jacked-up suspension, giant wheels and exhaust pipes that resembled the deck guns on the Bismarck. From the rumble, it was clear that it was a diesel.
Moments later, I was engulfed in a thick cloud of black smoke. And by thick, I mean the kind of solid smoke wall that naval fleets laid down at the Battle of Jutland to evade enemy fire. My first thought: there had to be something seriously wrong with this truck. I beeped my horn to alert the diesel driver that there was someone behind him. The driver revved his engine and the cloud got even thicker.
... Coal rollers use their exhaust smoke as a political message. It is a symbol of freedom and defiance. They lay down clouds of exhaust on hybrid drivers, cyclists, pedestrians and anyone else who strikes them as a liberal who would restrict their freedom to fill the air with carcinogenic diesel fumes.
... In an interview with Slate magazine, an unnamed manufacturer of smoke-stack kits explained the ethos that underlies coal rolling: I run into a lot of people that really dont like Obama at all, he said. If hes into the environment, if hes into this or that, were not. I hear a lot of that. To get a single stack on my truck thats my way of giving them the finger. You want clean air and a tiny carbon footprint? Well, screw you.

I guess assholes are gonna be assholes.

(18,101 posts)The "shallow gene pool" crack makes me think as little of him as I do the coal rollers.

(43,155 posts)It's essentially, "Fuck you, I want to be as much of an ugly, small-minded, selfish reactionary asshole as is humanly possible and fuck you for thinking otherwise!"
Same could be said for the folks who rushed to gun stores to stand in line to buy AR-15s right after Sandy Hook.
It's a sickness in the country.

(100,042 posts)Do they only target Prius drivers or drivers of all hybrid and electric cars? I bet if a Ford Fusion Energy or Tesla P85D were to pass them they wouldn't know the difference.

(675 posts)Just like handguns these diesel trucks are mostly penis-extenders for right wing men. In this day and age most reasonable people don't need anything more than a half ton truck with a small v6 engine, if you really must tow you can pay the premium and get something like the ford Eco boost which still gets mileage in the mid to low 20s.
I hope with the new CAFE standards coming on we see the end of these massive pickup trucks.

(26,582 posts)Do you live and spend all your time in an urban area? I know plenty of people that own or run ranches, tow horse trailers, etc. Heck, there's a truck in the parking lot outside with some hay in the back.

(15,396 posts)Put the 19" Triton behind each one and you'll realize the difference.
I borrow the 350 all the time to haul small stuff with (ATV, river boat ect....) There's really no reason to borrow the 150 when the 350 sits there beside my house and gets 21+ MPG. I borrow my buddies Triton 3 or 4 times a year and use the 350 to tow it with....He always gives me hell for bringing a truck that doesn't even know the boat is behind it.
I hope to pick up a bass boat in the coming year, I plan on picking up an older F250 diesel to tow it with (my other neighbor has 3, I think I can con him out of one) of course he also has a F250 petrol truck I may buy.
Who knows....I just know I need a bass boat of my own...and the Nissan Xterra doesn't have enough ass to tow a bigger boat. I've flat towed my Jeep (4575 pound on the scales) with the Xterra and the tiny little 4L just didn't like that. I don't want to tax the crappy tranny with a bass boat.

Earlier this summer. One can draw their own conclusions about the quality of the "gene pool" in Tucson.

(18,101 posts)Same here, though. I don't see that many diesel pick-ups. I've never seen this in real life.
