Stark San Francisco income gap between whites ($104,300), African Americans ($29,500)

Source: San Francisco Chronicle

For many, San Francisco income levels have been steadily rising the last four years.

The median household income for whites reached $104,300 last year, up 14 percent since 2011, according to recently released census data. The annual household median rose for Latinos and Asians, as well.

But not all have fared as well during the city's seemingly relentless explosion of wealth.

In the same span, the median income of San Francisco's shrinking black population fell to $29,500, a 5 percent decline. It's even lower than what blacks make in Oakland or San Bernardino County, the most affordable part of the state.

If 75% of the whites in the city are also making 29K, then it's a different can of worms.

(Not saying that's the case; just musing out loud.)

This is the second time in a week I've spaced on the definition of median.

Thanks!

I could barely save anything with a higher income than that, as a married couple, no kids, renting a 1 bedroom condo (in a good neighborhood), in LA... The only 2 things I used disposable income on were cable (~$100/month) and eating out on weekends (~$200/month for the 2 of us).

I guess those 2 "luxury" items could have been removed and I'd save an extra $3,500 per year. Its not like that would have catapulted us into the 1% or some crap though
